Steamboats and BBQ, ice cream cones and Mardi Gras - are you ready to laissez les bons temps rouler with the "gateway" to the Grateful Dead? Meet us, won't you, in St. Louis for seven complete and previously unreleased Dead concerts that capture the heart of the band's affinity for the River City.

LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73 is a 20CD set featuring five shows from the Fox Theatre - December 9 and 10, 1971; October 17-19, 1972; and two from the Kiel Auditorium - October 29 and 30, 1973.

The seven shows in the collection span slightly less than two years, but they represent some of the best shows the Grateful Dead played during some of its peak tours. The music tells the story of a band evolving, changing from one sound to another seamlessly, precipitated – in large part – by significant personnel changes in the Dead’s lineup.

The two 1971 shows feature the original Grateful Dead lineup plus newcomer Keith Godchaux on piano. This version of the band would hold together for the next six months as the Dead embarked upon its Europe ’72 tour. By the time the Dead returned to the Fox Theatre less than a year later, they were without Pigpen, who’d played his final show with the Dead at the Hollywood Bowl on June 17, 1972. A year after the exceptional Fox 1972 shows, the Dead came back to St. Louis, but played the much larger Kiel Auditorium, touring behind the release of WAKE OF THE FLOOD, which came out just two weeks before.

All told, the band played 60 different songs during these shows highlighted by blazing romps through “Beat It On Down The Line” and “One More Saturday Night” and wistful takes on “Row Jimmy” and “Brokedown Palace” (whose lyrics give the collection its name). Meanwhile, the copious jamming ebbed and flowed like the mighty Mississippi River on multiple voyages through “The Other One” and “Dark Star.” Naturally, the band paid tribute to one of its favorite rock and rollers and one of St. Louis’ biggest stars by playing Chuck Berry songs at every show in the collection, including Pigpen galloping through “Run Rudolph Run.”

Each show has been restored and speed corrected using Plangent Processes with mastering by Jeffrey Norman. The collection comes in a slipcase with artwork by Liane Plant and features an 84-page hardbound book as well as other Dead surprises. To set the stage for the music, the liner notes provide several essays about the shows, including one by Sam Cutler, the band’s tour manager during that era, and another by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether, among others.

Due October 1st, LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73, is limited to 13,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from Dead.net.

Is anyone working to correct the issues? Is anyone listening to us? These issues could be fixed in an hour and I am being generous. Post the files or refund our money!

I can't even get an acknowledgement from customer service that there is an issue. Set released on Friday. I bought it in July. How hard is it to put up some files for download?

anything like it. This company messes up the downloads every……..single………time!

That’s why I never order a download from here, and I never will.

FLAC download - only one show

I also attempted to download the set in FLAC format. The size of the zip file looked a little light. Low and behold, only 12/09/71 was in the zip file. I too have contacted customer support and I'm waiting. How hard can this be?

    Customer Service Needs Some Attention

I pre-ordered the digital box set on 8/12. I attempted to download the set on 10/1 (the advertised release date). As is the case with others, I was only able to download 12/9/71 show. I emailed on Friday. No reply. I emailed today (10/4). No reply. I have spent much much much money over the years on this site. This will more than likely be the last time. Complete bush league of a customer service department. Not even an acknowledgment from the business that they screwed up and when the problem will be fixed. Over $140+ of my money and no response.

    'Unable to Expand' error message

I also got the Unable to Expand error message when trying to unzip the FLAC files but used a 3rd party unarchiving utility (rather the ones built into the Mac and Windows OS) and it worked fine. This isn't uncommon with very large zip files and there are plenty of free or cheap options available for both operating systems.

I can't get my Pre-Order to download at all ! "Unable to Expand"

Sent a message to customer service and no service yet. I can't get this file to download in Chrome or Safari. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a Customer Service phone Number? Crazy that I ordered this the day it came out and Im unable to hear a note from the release on Friday. Its Monday and i'm still *patiently* waiting....

    Download issues

In my file set for 10/19/72 the Tennessee Jed is 44 kHz - 16 bit instead of 192 kHz - 24 bit, anybody else notice that?

And like others here I haven't been able to download 12/10/71 either.

And I want to second the request for digital liner notes. People don't opt for FLAC files over box sets for being cheap skates but because of space issues, environmental concerns or high-res, and should not be treated as 2nd class customers.

How broken is this process that everyone who pre ordered can only get 2 of the 20 discs but if you buy today you can get it all? I agree that they need to move this to Nugs. The Nugs system is flawless while Dead.Net is always challenging.

    When will this be fixed??????

I bought the box set in FLAC format this morning and all files were available for download with the receipt for my order.

I noticed the same thing on both nights. Even compared my rip to my CD and to a buddy's rip. Same thing. I don't know what goes into an engineering session like this, but the way this anomaly pops up right at the transition is telling. I'm just not sure what it tells us.....

One of those shows I really want to like..... but just doesn't sound right to me. I'm fine with the slowness, but the band sounds out of synch more often than not. Possibly Phil not being in the same place as the rest of the band that night. At first I thought it was just my ears but every time I give it another chance, I switch back to 10 29 and think to myself, 'yep, that's how its supposed to be done'. A show that gets better with each listen!

Not a complaint though. Still glad to have it for the HC Sunshine and Darkstar. And for completeness. Happens. Other releases with the same issue would be the Bonus Disc from DaP 34 (Jai-Alai Fronton- June 22, 1974) and first set from the July '78 Omaha show. Warts and all!

Just checked the ALAC files I made from the CD and yes there is a faint digi click between the tracks (sounds like a click or pop on vinyl), don’t which track it is associated with. It might be louder with headphones on.

just watching downhill from here (first time) Jerry really having some fun during the rider really good 1989 version from Alpine Valley. Also watched Romancing the Stone recently and the scene in the jungle where the two main characters find the down airplane the 'dead' pilot actually has a Grateful Dead jacket on... weird movie that somehow included the dead. Also been really digging the grateful dead movie soundtrack that wall of sound , sound still so unique. Plus the tons o March-April releases for anniversary purposes, and Europe 72 blah blah know you rider...
