Cowboy Junkies. If they come to your area, go see them. A bunch of people at the shows are from the old GD tribe. If you're ever in the Boston area, try to see Club D'Elf: http://www.clubdelf.com. This is a good show: http://www.archive.org/details/clubdelf2011-09-11.km184.v3.p2 You'll never be quite the same after witnessing these guys. Of course, any and every chance you get, try to go see Kimock. Amazing.

Excuse the double posting. I check in here everyday to read, but I just finally added my own first post (hurray!), and sure enough put it under the wrong category. So here's it again, this time under the correct topic... (The vibe at this show was so JerryBobPhil, that all week I've been feeling that I spent the weekend with them. But it was Floyd. A kind Floyd. Sweeeet.) I caught most of the House of Floyd last weekend and just wanted to pass the word, since there's not much Floyd written about here. This was the closest thing to an old Floyd concert that I've experienced, other than the recent Roger/Dave shows. They've got the space jam thing totally together. The Floyd tribute bands I've tried the past few hears have been mostly note for note copying of albums, especially the later albums which I'm not that fond of anyway (I was, just not anymore). House of Floyd played some great tunes and had the right "feel". They didn't copy/peforrm, but actually played the music as if it was their own. So some songs barely even sounded like the originals but it didn't matter at all. And the songs went from one right into the other. Very Dead-like. And the energy was turned on full throughout. This is the only video I've found of the show. I missed about the first half of the first set, but I got to see Echoes (AWESOME!), Shine On II (see video), some tunes I never heard that really jammed, and a Dark Side of the Moon that was full of amazing energy and effects. One of those shows that you wished you knew about in advance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GccbVwEs310

jamasutra featuring Barry the Fish Melton (Deadicace members)
Jas Obrecht review First, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams. International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. Order this Seafood Records release at www.barrymelton.com and www.jamasutra.com.

I was fortunate enough to see Shadow when he came to Baltimore a while back (sorry it has taken me so long to post this) and I think this guy is on to something really cool. I didn't see him as being a DJ but rather an artist playing the most complicated digital instrument ever conceived. I had a blast and can't wait to see another show and I really wish I had enough stamina to have seen him after that epic Super Jam @ Bonnaroo in '06 (If memory serves). I had to hear about that show for years from my sons while waiting my chance to take in the experience.

Speaking of Panic - they are getting ready for a 3 night run in the Fox in Oakland. If you live in the Bay area, get your rear to these shows!! Oh and bring ear plugs, they are the loudest band I have ever heard live. And that is saying something =) "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

especially if you like his earlier work: the Boz Scaggs Memphis album currently sitting by the cash register at my local Starbucks, where it caught me in a weak moment this morning. As the name suggests, Boz goes to Memphis and gets some great session folks and does old tunes. More smoldering than pyrotechnic, but some very nice moments. I think my favorite so far is "Corinna, Corinna," not the Hunter song but the old folk song that's on that early Bob Dylan album...

I agree with Marye that this is well worth listening to. Even better is the Barnes and Noble exclusive edition which features 6 demos on a second CD. Three of the six feature on the regular album, three do not. These are not rough but polished demos. I actually prefer the demo disc to the regular disc (don't tell Boz !).

Didn't know where to put this question, and I apologize if it has been asked and answered elsewhere, but I didn't see a thread for JGB. Not in GD section. Not in this one. Ratdog. Phil & Friends. Donna Jean. Mickey. But no JGB? Seems rather curious, to say the least. They are still putting out releases, Garcia Live, for instance, and I just wandered over to see if there was opinion on it, and no thread for JGB. What's up?

http://www.jefferydragrecords.com A small indie label started by Adam Moult of the Nashville, TN band Bad Cop has VERY quickly grown into a staple record label of a lot of the underground punk/rock world in that state. Bad Cop is, of course, on the label, but you can also find releases from Useless Eaters, Turbo Fruits, Natural Child, Ranch Ghost, Ghost Dance, Majestico, Little Viking, Western Medication, Promised Land, Fancytramp, Magic Milk, and more. Check out Jeffery Drag Records, indie music released by an indie label.

These guys opened strong for a really good show by Steve Winwood last year at the Fillmore. Winwood's voice is still one of the great ones, up there with Jerry, Bob, Greg Allman, Muddy, Toots, Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Lennon, Jagger and Ronnie Van Zant. And the guy is just so musical, long guitar solos that never ran out of ideas and of course his keyboard playing has always been among the best. "Can't Find My Way Home" was fucking amazing. But I was writing on new bands so...The Wood Brothers opened and played original tunes with a strong American roots feeling. I would definitely see them again. http://www.thewoodbros.com

Attention all you Dead Head Blues fans. There is a GREAT lineup of blues guitarists playing in Ventura California at Mission Park on Sunday 22 September as part of the BBQ and Blues Day of the California Beer Festival. My old next door neighbor from Ojai Mr. Robben Ford and two awesome ladies: From Texas it's Carolyn Wonderland and from Belgrade it's Amsterdam resident Ana Popovic. Many of you may have already seen Robben Ford with his own band or backing up John Mayall on tour or playing with Phil Lesh & Friends some years ago. But if you have not seen Carolyn Wonderland or Ana Popovic yet, well, you are in for a real treat! These two ladies are guaranteed to knock your blues socks off! So if you're a resident of the Los Angeles-Ventura-Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo counties, and you're a fan of top-notch live blues guitar, you can't go wrong with this coming Sunday afternoon show in Downtown Ventura California. I will see you there! http://www.californiabeerfestival.com/ventura.php

Hi All,I just found out that John Batdorf, long an associate of Brent Mydland, is playing a show in the Los Angeles area. This from his website: ~~ ~~ ~~ Sunday, December 15th, 2013 4:00 PM John Batdorf Red Rocks Concert Present Sunday at The Book Store- Crown Books Store 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd. # 1340 Woodland Hills, Ca. 91367 Price: $15.00 Donation I am thrilled to be opening a new series in the valley. This show kicks off the new series produced by Ron Sarfaty. Please come out and support Ron and myself so this can become a regular event! ~~ ~~ ~~ It's my local mall, and the space is a big, former Barnes and Noble store that they want to do some funky things in. I was just there, and I'm sure this is gonna have a Living Room Concert kind of vibe to it. If you're around the San Fernando Valley that night, I'll see you there!

Do you guys remember Klaatu? and their album 3:47 EST? I forgot all about the fiasco until this made the rounds on Facebook - https://ledgernote.com/blog/interesting/klaatu-the-secret-band-as-good-… It's a pretty good roundup of how it all went down. It was the mid-70's and Klaatu released their first album without any mention of who the band members were. It was pretty good, and somehow the rumor started spreading that it was The Beatles under a new name. The record company started encouraging the rumors and it was a huge ordeal. They made a ton of money on that record. The thing was, they didn't sound anything like The Beatles. They were certainly good, as good as any other prog rock band is good. But the allegations were silly. All of that is besides the point though. The 3:47 EST album is really good. They had some singles after that but I haven't really dug into their discography beyond this album.

Donna the Buffalo a solid Americana band. Tara Nevis plays numerous instruments allowing them to do different sounding stuff. Originally called Dawn of the Buffalo, the story goes their name was misstated from the stage way back, when they were all high on acid and so became Donna the Buffalo. Catch them this summer outside, they play numerous outside festivals usually a few upstate New York.http://donnathebuffalo.com/ The RI festival over Labor Day Weekend is a great one. Small enough to still be fun. Great if you have kids to bring since low key.camping is cool and many motels near by if camping isn't your thing. Camp closer away from the backwoods if all night music might bother you as numerous campers bring instruments to jam. With a dance tent on one end and stage at the other and usually an eclectic assortment of bands. http://rhythmandroots.com/ Ocean nearby and pond to swim in.

From the Yankton Sioux Reservation, South Dakota. Mato Nanji on lead guitar is extremely talented .

What!!! I gotta check this out!!! I took my wife and daughter last year to Roger Waters. They really enjoyed that....But, I may be the Lone Ranger on this one. People seem to get weirded out when I listen to the older stuff like Ummagumma, Saucer, Atom heart etc... Gotta find a friend to go to the show in Denver.

You’re so right about Cubensis. They’ve played around So Cal since 1989 and over 3500 shows! Very skilled and fun to see them jam.
