Really wish they'd offer these individually. I already had Betty boards of New Haven and Cornell from many years ago on CD. I'd love to buy Boston and Buffalo. They should offer them for sale via FLAC

Doing the anniversary listens

And I give 5 out of 5 bolts to this box. I also have an extra Box that I will sell for what it cost me, plus shipping (U.S. addresses) to you. PM me if interested. The extra box has been opened and all CDs listened to to confirm no defects. 5-5-77 CD2 was defective and I received a replacement from Rhino.

One year later

I'm still loving these 4 great shows!I'll bring up my rating to four and three quarters bolts. (out of 5 bolts) Why? Only the individual show cases are a bit flimsy and the whole box is a bit too big for me, and there is a wee bit of wasted space in the box. The 5/5/77 New Haven show is an audio upgrade for me from a B+ cassette that was directly transferred to CD-R in 2002 by somebody else for me to this fantastic CD mastered by Jeffery Norman.

The Box

Overrated? Of course these concerts are overrated. But, still fabulous music in a great period. I would line up May 19, 21, 22 against the 'holy trinity' and not feel at a disadvantage. In ways, the later part of May has more energy, the earlier part more precision. All wonderful, and comparable to the April-May '72 period (without the long jams for the most part). Thanks to all for putting this out. Now, what's next?

"Numbered" - where!?

my other may 77 box set has a STAMPED number...3407/5000 or whatever - not seeing this stamped on the "limited, numbered" cornell get shown the light one - am i blind?? help!

Cornell IS a good show. Cornell was a great tape rollin' around back in the day because of quality of sound... I think it was one of the more crystal clear shows I'd heard up to that point... All of May, shoot... the overwhelmingly GRAND majority of '77 was unbelievable! There are many "best" versions or among the best versions of singular songs throughout that whole month span....and many in this 4 night run. ’77, while fantastic for deadheads, is what I consider “tolerable” go to dead for non-heads… such as my better half. She’s never been passionate about the dead. So, I have always felt pretty good about playing anything from ’77, especially May, when we’re on a road trip or something. The sound is great, playing is great… vocals are pretty much as good as it ever got and mistakes are minimal and not very noticeable to a non-head. Same goes for 89-90… Another May '77 note- The whole band is tight but Bob is at one of the many peaks of his game. Bob's attention to his songs and detail is unparalleled. He's sooo good during this time frame. However, I'm more of a fan of the following night in Buffalo as a full show goes. Cornell>Buffalo – the best two shows in a row…. Possibly. ☺ All of that being said.. this box is a tremendous representation of what the best of the best looks, feels, and sounds like. And, well done on the box. Excited to crack the book and see what's beyond the music. 5/5 - Veterans - The 1st set is better than the second set... Sugaree > unreal. Cowboy tunes(mama tried, el paso) are spot on and energetic. Looks Like Rain > stunning. 2nd set is great but seems to drop in energy… highlights - Good Lovin', St. Stephen, Sugar Mag 5/7 - Boston- Fantastic 1st set- very well played - Peggy O,1/2 step!, Big river, Music Never Stopped - 2nd set - Great Terrapin- A Top 10 FOTD(in my opinion), the wheel>wharf>around stretch is stellar. 5/8 - Cornell - Great show - solid start - 1st set really gets cookin' around TLEO and Jack Straw. Lazy>Sup is great but Jerry has been better on others. He makes up for it on the Brown Eyed Women...(one of the best). Dancin is great.. (Palladium is still tops for me). 2nd set is extremely well played - Scarlet > fire .. the best ever? (I dunno… but it’s ridiculous). Estimated… tell me a bad estimated from May… St. Stephen> NFA>St. Stephen – solid… MORNING DEW!!!! Holy Smokes!!!! 5/9 – Buffalo – wow. wow. holy, wow. Out of the gate chasing, running down, and lapping the night before. The band is HOT and they know it. A nasty Help > Slip> Franklin’s. Slipknot is magnificent. Cassidy,BEW, Mex, Big River… whole first set is crackling with energy… Shoot… Donna even raised her Sunrise game. TMNS set closer is just plain fire. 2nd set is phenomenally played. The band stretches out a bit more that some of the other textbook 77 nights. Garcia is oozing passion – Bertha opener..Ship of fools, Comes a time… he’s in it to win it. The pocket Estimated>Other One> NFA is adventurous and the band is so dialed in. They are so intent on being one… vocals and all. You know it’s good when they get past the music and can really lean in on making the vocals “just right”. Uncle John’s Band is a great example of that and a great closer. Unreal…. Wish I was there.

Everbody OK?

Rhino has come in for a fair bit of disparagement on these forums, but I have always found them to be the ones who bail out the dead.net folks when things go a bit sideways. In the last 18 months I've engaged in a major update to my inventory, often paying semi-ridiculous amounts to 3rd parties for several of the out of print box sets, as well as picking up stuff at the dead.net site (this can happen to a 71-78 concert goer who faded in and out of infatuation, but is now fully back in). The days when I could pick up the newest Dick's Picks as it came out seem downright quaint in light of today's web frenzy. The folks at Rhino have always come through, whether emailing clean digital files from online purchases, or even replacing a disc from the out of print May 77 box 7 years after its release, and doing so in a prompt and helpful manner. It's difficult to realize that getting an order through for this new box took 50 (yeah, I kept count) attempts, and that it worked only after a break, and then finding that the dead.net site redirected to Rhino. Warner records is not a small outfit, and it's pretty amazing that they and the dead folks didn't anticipate that this announcement would generate the overload that it did. But, thanks to Rhino, I have a confirmation of order, and will make do with Rob Eaton's mix from archive.org until the primo sound version, with other shows, arrives. This will make the Spring 77 tour, with the all of the releases on Dick's Picks, May 77 box, and single shows a strong second to Europe 72 for most covered tour, I suspect. May the music never stop....

After much frustration and many hours. My order went through. Strangely it went through the Rhino Webstore. I received an email confirmation and there's a pending charge on my credit card. Here's hoping it's for real. I may just call in to Customer Service tomorrow to confirm. Good Luck fellow Deadheads!

Not too bad

After initially getting thrown off the site after getting to checkout, went back in half hour later and got through to checkout and got my confirmation email, box set and Cornell vinal set. Somewhat surprised about Cornell release, excuse has often been that everyone already had a great copy, which I do, have had it for 20 years, soundboard quality. Still interested to see what they could do on official release as well as the other shows. Already have good copy of Buffalo, not others. Always thought that Baltimore later that month was great as well, great copies of that all around. Regards. Ned.

Order Confirmed

Ok. Got my order finally in and confirmed through the revised interface. After 7 hours. So all is well for me in the world. That does not make this ok. It does not make it ok for anyone who spent hours today getting an order through. That was not excusable after all the previous fiascos. It should have been avoided. And for anyone who tried to get this done today and gave up, and ends up getting shut out, it will not be ok. My bloodpressure will go down (truth to tell it didn't really go up much, if I had to buy via digital on release I would have been fine) but this really has been bad. I still have more GD music than I will ever really listen to again in this life (including the two of these shows that matter most to me). Back to Rockin the Rhein and my favorite Dark Star segue. Enjoy all.

A vote for winter/spring 1971

I always hoped that they would do a box set of this period, right up there with their best. The shows that resulted in the Double Skeleton album were consistently great, Filmore East and West, Manhattan center, etc. The greatest Morning Dews, Hard to Handles, Truckins, Cumberlands, Bobby McGees, Cold Rain,etc. Jerry on a Strat, love that sound and tone, pure before all the fancy guitars, makes it ring and sing. I always thought their most intense, high energy jamming, nothing quite like it after those April Fillmore shows, always thought they were down a notch in energy from then forward, not that I still didn't love the stuff, just different. I was having problems too. I registered for rhino.They actually had all my info from dave's picks after I registered. Then it was not excepting my credit card same one for 2017 subscription. Could not find a phone number to talk to someone. Starting to panic then I figured my anti virus wanted me to use credit card protection thru them. Rhino not to secure. Got thru and confirmed. Please stop. There's more than a hint of humour to our self-commiseration over the events of this afternoon. Personally, the surprise in this set with be New Haven. I've no recollection of my acquaintance with this show, though my notes indicate having listened to the Wallwork transfer back in 2011, with particular attention to that 18-minute Sugaree in the TWO slot - no first set warm-up required this night! I've opened the Taper's Compendium and the attendant review describes this rendition as "one of the longest and finest ever performed", to include "three coruscating jams, each quite different in character". I had to look up "coruscating": it means "flashing; sparkling" or "brilliant or striking in content or style", which is pretty much Spring 77 in a nutshell! 2nd set: 23min ScarFire and a St.S during which JG "studiously ignores several attempts at intervention by other members of the band [to transition back to vocals]"...April showers bring mad May improvisations...

I finally got mine

It only took 7 hours and using my phone to get it done. It was feeling a lot like "Fare Thee Well" today but I actually scored this time! Hurry up May 5th and summer tour......what a great year it's gonna be.

Am just surprised that there don't seem to be more onboard with this sentiment. What you call intense, I call the dirty and nasty guitar leads, devoid of any sparkly dust and noodling.

Wow. I just logged in to post about 71, but ned and frost beat me to it. Sure we are all happy about this release, but I am far more interested in a box from the February 71 Capitol Theater run.

Yup. Finally worked. Looks like they set up the gratefuldead.warner site on its own little server, then rate limited how many connections it would take at once. So each time you had to reconnect to get to the next phase of ordering, it was a brand new lottery to see if you'd be "administratively prohibited." Hell of a way to run an airline. Rhino did refuse the credit card I'd been entering in the almost-made-it runs though. Wonder if they tainted it somehow.

Anyone else ever had this happen?

Honestly.. I've been a bit burned out on 77 the last few years.. and would be psyched for a bigen 71. That being said.. Kate's post got me thinking about 77 Sugaree's and I've always been big on Buffalo, and oh hell.. Cornells pretty goddamned good even if its overplayed. My mojo is rising just writing this post.. I'm happy with what we have, and knowing theres hundreds of reels yet to be released, some of which are likely not documented makes my blood boil a bit. This could be the singular greatest day since One From the Vault for GD recording enthusiasts. Its a holy shit moment. Nothing but smiles from my end.

The powers that be will be comparing notes. Got my confirmation. Thank you GD, Rhino, etc., for the goods, the almost heart attack, and the evening's entertainment (that's one word for it anyway.) We were lucky to be on the board this morning before the email went out. My order sailed through unimpeded. I gotta say, how the hell did something this good happen - that the most incredible band changed so much from year to year to provide such a varied palate, then taped most of it to where it could be Norman-ed and released with such fidelity? Pinch. Sometimes good shit just happens.

Whew, that was close! lol I tried earlier today and forget about it, the site kept crashing over and over again! lol...I figured i'd give it a rest and try later in the night after the frenzy calmed down. It's 5.30am in Sweden and about one hour ago I finally got mine. I had gone to sleep but one of my cats woke me up, as she does every now and then. Video: future plans

Dave's 21 and 22 from these returned Bettys. I bet they've got Capitol Theater 1971, and that will be a big box for next year for my guess. Sorry 80s guys, maybe they will make 23 from the 80s or 90s, because it sounds like they're really going to capitalize on the return of 100 shows worth of Bettys. They have to put the work into restoring these tapes anyway, so I'm betting a lot of 70s stuff is coming.

FINALLY

Dave, terrific news, towards the end of the video when you say "released FINALLY on CD" and roll your eyes, agree totally. Dave, you rock, you STILL DA MAN!! Hope College Park 1981 gets a release in the near future, Cheers.

Where is 5/4/77 ?

First off dont take my questions and requests as being ungrateful or complainiing in any way, i am thrilled that we are getting such a great boxed set. LOVE IT. Subscribe to the series and love all the boxed sets. BUT Where is 5/4/77?????? Is it not in the vault? A second set sbd does circulate. Is it just a case of not having a complete sbd? Obviously they dont want to put an incomplete show in a boxed set. But maybe a future bonus disc for daves picks series??? Just curious if anybody knows any more background on such a great show, that i wish would get an official release. Next question...when are we getting 1-22-78?

Funny how heads be crashing the website and freaking out. Yeah, me too, but it all worked out this evening. Barton Hall was my first "Soundboard" bootleg, and it HOOKED me. I don't recall having to mention that too many times before dudes be slapping Buffalo and Boston tapes in my hands. And the Race Is On, and There Goes Face Melt!

Had to go away from 4pm PST till a half hour ago, and luckily they didn't sell out while I was away. I better put my confirmation number in a safety deposit box. Now let's see if they can ship them out without a snafu.
