"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

That ABB release ---- The Owsley website is not as clear as it could be, But what I gather is that currently there is a 1 CD compilation available that is basically a remastered version of a release from the 90s. Its the ABB opening for the Dead at Fillmore East in Feb. 70.(The sets that became Dick's 4) They are also going to release digital versions of all the material they have of the ABB on those nights. Presumably that includes more stuff than is on the single CD. Last I looked the CD is available now but the downloads are not yet. owsleystanleyfoundation.org I have the original disc from the 90s. Its awesome.

On the Owsley Stanley Foundation site it does clearly state: "Long out-of-print, these recordings was transferred and remastered from the original tapes in Owsley Stanley’s archives, and includes all new album art and liner notes, including a series of rare band photos from the Fillmore East in February 1970, original cover artwork (“Electric Mushroom”), and new notes from the Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation. This is the second release in the award-winning “Bear’s Sonic Journals” series and the first joint presentation by the Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation." "Long out-of-print..." meaning that this is a remaster from Bear's original tapes. It probably won't sound too different from the original 1997 Grateful Dead Records GDCD 4013 single disc release. This re-release has been re-packaged with nicer art, more photos and a 2nd essay (liner notes). Hopefully, the original liner notes by Bear will be included in this release, too.

I'm here for Flo. We're going to see the show. Is she ready to go?" The farmer likes this fellow and sends Joe and Flo off. The second man to show up says, "Hello, I'm Eddy. I'm looking for Betty. We're gonna go eat some spaghetti. Is she ready?" The farmer decides this guys okay too so off they go. The third man rings the doorbell says, "Hey, my name's Chuck." And the farmer shot him. ....because coitus.

Most fun song about gettin’ down is perhaps Comander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen’s Everyone’s doing it now” (not sure if they wrought it?)...... GVF: saw last night on tonight show....those boys rock even if they do like like their 12! Definitely have that Zep vibe, and the singer has an AC/DC think going on.....but he looks like a hobbit! All he needs is the big hairy feet.

Bessie Smith recorded some great songs which would make a grown man come. "Empty Bed Blues Parts 1 and 2" are two of the best. In rock music, its pleasing that The Stones took a song about oral sex-"Brown Sugar" to the top of the charts. Honourable mention also to Lou Reed for having a hit with "Walk on the Wild Side", referencing transvestism, male prostitution and many other things guaranteed to make straight societies blood boil, had they known what he was singing about.

You have to remember it was a very different world in 1971. Songs could be banned for the slightest perceived impropriety. In 1967 both "Lets Spend The Night Together" and "A Day in the Life" being were banned or censored for perceived sex and drug references. This was surely part of the reason why Lennon claimed "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was based on one of son Julian's paintings-to escape the censors. Two other great records that got banned were "God Save The Queen " by The Sex Pistols number 1. during the week of the Queens Jubilee, in 1977 and "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood which was a massive hit in England in 1985. Both part of the honourable tradition in rock n' roll of offending the "straights"/over 30s.

Superb show with Phil & TF last night on the Burlington waterfront... we had our backs to the water, however the band could look out over maybe 4000 of us at the big lake and the Adironracks on horizon as the sun set. Massive speaker arrays meant great outdoor audio, we got there a bit late, set up near the sound and light tent where audio seemed at peak. When Phil dropped deep ones, it was quite visceral. They opened with UJB, went to PITB, played for about two hours straight. Finished with a very rocked out version of Ripple. Throwing Stones, Mountains of the Moon, Ramble, Brown Eyed, weirdly, Crosby's Almost Cut My Hair. Lucky with the weather for this outdoor show, lots of rain lately but perfectly clear for some celestial viewing, big moon, Venus low in the west, Mars bright low to the south and Jupiter higher up in the SW. heads up, the Perseids start in a week or so. Get away from urban light pollution, stay up late on a blanket so you can lay back eyes wide open and view full sky, enjoy the show. Most of us will miss the lunar eclipse tonight, no show in North America. This was the first large outdoor show like this in Vermont since the law changed, and the park rules indicate no smoking. However the entire scene was dare i say, very mellow, the only po i saw stayed with their vehicle about fifty feet behind us, didn't see them dance but they were definitely moving to the music. Discreet vaping, a few spliffs, the lines at the beer tents never got short. All ages, surprised by the numbers of families with kids... being a park, no fixed seating, lots of folding chairs but most folks stayed on their feet dancing. We are all part of one big party empathic synchronous joyfulness of moment vibe was in full swing. Had heard there was a hard curfew stop 10 pm... they played until 10:40 and Phil closed with his organ donor appeal.. Just looked for recent live Phil clips, found this excellent video full show, please forgive if already posted D&C 7.14.18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifgvnzbIJLo

“Brown Sugar” is gross, sexist, and stunningly offensive toward black women. Some of the lyrics (Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields / Sold in the market down in New Orleans / Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright / Hear him whip the women just around midnight) are so bad that Mick Jagger changes them during shows.

DaP 27 has arrived!! Checked the mailbox when we were leaving the house and there it was. Taking the boys to the circus (Circus Smirkus) and a BBQ at their cousins after the show so no listening yet. Even though my boys are starting to learn the songs I let them listen to warm up music for the circus. At five and 7 their fave are Fire on the Mtn, Tennessee Jed, PITB (no they aren’t able to list their top five yet), and some others. Just the three of us so after their mom left a few years ago the stereo had been on most waking moments. They are learning all my favs (Dead, Floyd, Zep, Bowie (sorry no Doors here and hopefully that won’t spark another Doors / Who debate). Mostly live but some studio Bowie and other stuff. Music is very therapeutic so there has been a lot of music. Anyway - hopefully others will get theirs today and enjoy.

Yes-as they say the past was a different country. Incidentally, you may already know, but the line "scarred old slaver" was originally "Skydog slaver" and was a reference to Duane Allman. It was never printed like that in any song books, and I assume Jagger has sung "scarred old slaver" for years. Unless that's one of the lines he changed, of course!

after hearing the words to Rolling Stone's Brown Sugar I will be taping off my computer desk, get underneath in the fetal position and make it a safe space. I know I have the choice to not listen to the song, but its much easier to make people change lyrics because I have bad logic lol

Some great pics coming thru on eclipse and of course mars in opposition. Skies be craaazy. Waiting on Dave to deliver. Vile thoughts...Brown Sugar recorded just over there. What a funky funky place. Serious played the whole last show at Fillmore this morning it was a nice way to start the day. Last Alligator and all, to me foreshadowing the continuing change...

Pick arrived today. Nice after a brutal week. About half way through the first set. Now, I'm a fan of mid-80s Dead, and this is a good one. Brown-Eyed Women cooks! OK, so Jerry flubbed a few lyrics, meh, so what. Glad to see an pick in the 83-86 time frame. That being said, I hope the next pick comes from 68 or 69 ... or 91-94, or, I guess I really don't care. There's a Dead show for every mood.

Art reflects life. Art comments on reality. There are sexist male chauvinist pigs. There were slave owners who raped and tortured slaves. Come out from under your desk. Or stay there. You'll be safe from the Bible, Shakespeare, Mozart's operas, Picasso, Joyce, Mapplethorpe, etc etc etc. The idea that some art is not "defensible" scares the hell out of me. Why don't you run the lyric "We can share the women we can share the wine" through your PC filters and see what you come up with?

Well I got mine and it's a bit disappointing! I'm not sure how this passes the smell test for audio quality. The vocals are way out front and the the overall sound is thin...The performance is fairly mediocre as well...Different strokes for different folks...Oh well see what comes next!

Love me some Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, but...they rarely wrote anything you would consider a "hit"..."Everybody's Doing It Now" is actually "Everybody's Truckin' " by these cats, The Modern Mountaineers from way back....Unfortunately it looks like the Ol' Commander scrubbed the writer credit after changing the name...(and who knows, maybe one of the Memphis Jug Bands of the time did it too) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ2o2wPrI-s ...Also the original "Everybody's Doing It" is an Irving Berlin song... But all that aside, I do Love me some Commander & The Lost Planet Airmen...what a frickin' band...saw them open for the Dead quite a few times...sweet

....Distraught, she decides to visit a wise old monk who lives alone up in the mountains. After a few days of travelling, walking, climbing, she reaches the top and meets the wise monk. "I have spent my whole life with him, my youth was dedicated to support him and to take care of him. And now he has left me for a young woman. My life is stolen, and I'm left with nothing. I am so lost and I don't know what to do". The monk gives her a cookie and asks her to eat it. After she finishes eating, he asks: "Was the cookie delicious?" "Yes"- she answers. "Do you want another one?" "Sure, please". The monk looks her in the eye and says "Do you see the problem now?" The woman thinks for a while, and slowly comes to a realization. "It is in human nature to be greedy. You got one, then you want more, maybe a new one, bigger one. It's never enough. Nothing will be good enough, and nothing lasts forever, everything is impermanence. We should be aware and not be disappointed by our very nature". The monk shakes his head. "No, I mean you are too fat and you should eat less." ....I haven't gotten my Dave's yet, so you guys get another joke.

vGuy - OK that's funny. Reminds of of a doctor friend of mine whose patient was discouraged about erectile dysfunction. He had him pull out a wedding photo and a current photo box his wife, and the wife had gained a ton of weight and he told him "There's your problem - it's not you, it's her!" Far from PC, but it happened. DaP27 arrived - 1221 and 1776... two low numbers and somewhat close together. Not that it matters. Looking forward to listening and NOT being surprised that the sound isn't optimal. Much prefer '70's but I love the occasional 80's show, and this one is from around the time of my first show, so brings back memories. Brown Sugar - I know a guy who sang this in church, in front of his friends and congregation. "We'd like to sing a song in church Sunday, pastor." Pastor - "It's great y'all are getting together to play music as a community - sure let's celebrate that positivity and hear one of your songs." I am not kidding - I know because I saw a video someone made of it. I guess it could have been worse and coulda been "Dynamo Hum " by Zappa.
