"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Pre-Fall '83 Tour rolls on with a nice show at Red Rocks. Again, the mix and the playing are spot on. This Help Slip Franks is ON FIRE. Whew. If Boise is as good as 9-4 and 9-6 we're in for a real treat. I admit, '83 has been a blind spot for me, with just the Hartford Dick's Picks and the 10-21 Centrum 30 Trips show. I'm really digging this mini-tour. I'm also a big fan of the various sounds Brent's coaxing out of his keyboards. I know not everyone is down with the synth sounds, but I think they add a nice variation to the songs. Pre drums jam is as good as advertised in the comments on archive. As you were.

Is the version on the Duane Allman anthology the one from the Boz Scaggs album? If so, it is indeed a killer, if not then you owe it to yourself to check out that Boz album. Allegedly Duane's guitar track was recorded in the studio toilet. Whether this was for the acoustics or there was too little room in the studio I know not. Incidentally, that album was recently reissued in England as a 2 CD set by Edsel Records, 2015. One CD was the original 1969 release, the other was the 1977 remix. Now where have I come across that situation recently?

Right you are, Simon. From Boz: As things turned out at the very end of the sessions we had a small amount of time left and everyone who'd been involved were all there. Now it was very difficult to get everyone in the studio at one time because Muscle Shoals wasn't very big. We had the horns out in the corridor, I was singing in the rest room next to the soda machine, and Duane was enclosed with his amplifier in a kind of broom closet in the middle. We just started to run it through for one take to make sure that everyone knew where they were going, and then because time was running out, went for one final take. The energy that was in the room was just fantastic; Roger Hawkins on the drums really got into the thing, changing up the tempo several times, and the sax player just came up with this riff that the others fell into. And of course Duane's playing was just out of sight. I know the cuts from Anthology and Boz Scaggs (album) are from the same sessions.. the seem to at least be different mixes as the times are different. Someone out there might have a better answer than this, if I get a chance I will revisit later and give them a closer listen. I saw Phil's band do this in either 2007 or 2008 and this kid seemingly fresh out of high school named Jackie Green really nailed the vocals and did an amazing job on guitar to boot (well.. he was clean cut and looked very young). I left that night asking myself, who was that kid with all the guitars and the voice... Doesn't quite stack up to the original, but it's worth a listen. Nothing on YouTube for that, but the Archive has us covered. https://archive.org/details/paf2007-11-03.sbd.phillesh.net.89182.flac16

interesting to see that name. rolling stone has an article about Kim Gordon + someone doing a something. Body/Head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zMBbDMuO4s&list=PLR3AfS9hAf8XD8F6WolKd… i listened to some. you might like it, you might hate it. it would probably be awesome to hear driving on a "dark desert highway" with a full moon at night, in the right frame of mind ;) it's what made me post about Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music yesterday. Kim Gordon is 64 freaking years old. sonic youth was a band I liked and didn't like simultaneously. "pretentious genius" is my term for SY. Steal Your Youth

Glad kevinbrandon took my comment as the gentle ribbing it was intended to be. I have to admit I have gone through some similar lines of thought while setting up my home stereo - do I really need pure copper speaker wires instead of copper clad aluminum? Do my speaker wires need to be the exact same length for each speaker? Who knows, but it doesn't seem to hurt. Have I arranged the furniture in my living room to optimize the sound of my stereo by maximizing the clearance between the floorstanding speakers and any furniture that might remotely obstruct the path of the sound to my optimum listening position? Sure, and man was my wife surprised when she realized that I was arranging the furniture for that purpose. Currently listening to DaP 10 from 12/12/69 and realizing that every time I listen to it I think maybe I under-rated it in the past.

A very powerful album-this is the one that has the great "Death Valley 69" on it. Everything I have heard by Sonic Youth has an intensity about it that immediately catches my attention. The Body/Head track had the same vibe. In a way, the first time I heard Sonic Youth reminded me of the first time I saw "Eraserhead". Deeply intriguing. I only saw them the once though,-supporting Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds round about 1985 at the legendary ( what do you mean "never heard of it!") Hacienda in Manchester.

Daydream Nation was my first SY album. and I will say I wasn't endeared to it right away. but eventually sonic youth among other bands (most are featured in the "our band could be your life" book) were what I was listening to heavily in '02-'03 probly at the peak of my Dead appreciation (its actually declined a bit)

complaining at livephish.com? that's all they do. well, not all. I say it was an awesome set BOTH were. but I will say it was not the greatest performance of Silent In the Morning. and not the greatest scents and subtle sounds kinda started off a bit rusty flubby but they may have not played it in awhile. but I would def. buy the audio download I loved it. now, at livephish.com they would've bitched about silent in the morning and Scents & Subtle sounds not say anything positive, and say the band lost their edge, need to stop and was a horrible concert. and I would buy webcasts in the future maybe not everyone but I got to watch it the comfort of my own home and got to piss when I wanted to. a Roggae opener I've never heard that.

Judysparty, I almost NEVER get a shipping notice until AFTER I receive the cd. I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably on the way. Also,I never check the tracking, as it's just too frustrating. The shipment will start from south of me, go northwest, then past me to the southeast. Then....northeast past me again, etc, etc, etc. It's much more peaceful for me to just wait for the mailman to deliver, that way, I am surprised.

That first Boz album is in fact the second Boz album. The first, just titled "Boz" was released only in Sweden in 1966 and only 300 copies were pressed - therefore a hard to find item to say the least. However, it was reissued on CD in 2014 by the South Korean label Big Pink. It is OK but as MaryE rightly said the album with "Loan me a dime" etc. on it is awesome - as are most of his subsequent albums. His new album "Out of the blues" will be released tomorrow! Bear's Sonic Journals - Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East 1970 is a single CD with the following tracks: 1. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed 2. Hoochie Coochie Man 3. Statesboro Blues 4. Trouble No More 5. Outskirts of Town 6. Whipping Post 7. Mountain Jam Remastered from Bear's original tapes, this will be released on August 10. Is this a reissue of an earlier release? I am not really familiar with the Allman Brothers catalog so I do not know. I'm sure someone here knows more than me.

It looks like a reissue to me. I've got the one that came out in 1997, and its got exactly the same song list. Although its possible that they played the same set every night. Its got some sleeve notes by Bear, and he refers to it as being.."pretty much what the audience at the show actually heard." Which suggests that it was a recording of one particular show-although it doesn't specify which one. The title of the disc, though, refers just to "Feb 70" which suggests that it was a compilation made from the shows they played in that run. Which is a long winded way of saying that I don't know either.
