During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

But in early 1976, Apollonian light and healing would shine upon our intrepid wanderers once again. No more epic battles for the people with cops and lines and tightness, the Dead would return triumphant in smallness, playing intimate theaters and renting equipment along the way. No more ticket scams and greedy promoters, they'd give back with first ever mail-order ticket program, one that had a few kinks to work out but eventually served the fans well.

Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead. It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean was in lock-step with the sirens' call. Jerry and Bob delivered orphic delight with solo musings like "Mission In The Rain" (the only tour they ever played it on), "The Wheel," and "Cassidy," emboldened by group effort. There was fresh repertoire from Blues For Allah, breathing new life to the Dead's continually morphing sound - as Weir once said of the '76 tour, they wanted to play "a little bit of all of it." Old favorites were re-envisioned with cascading tempos and unique sequencing, making the crowd question if they'd ever heard these songs before. And there was comfort and joy in the familiarity of watching the band make it up as they went along. By all means, it was clear that the bacchanalia of live Dead would reign on.

And now the revelry from this epoch, evidenced by the near-studio quality sound captured on two-track live recordings by Betty Cantor-Jackson, lives on, bolstered by Jeffrey Norman's HDCD mastering. It's housed for posterity in a handsome box featuring original art work by Justin Helton. It’s documented in liners by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon. And it’s ready for a spot on your shelf.

As part of our pre-order for this Dead.net exclusive boxed set, we'll be delivering downloads of each listening party - one for each show included in JUNE 1976 - to purchasers from now until the March 20th release. Order at any time before release and you'll receive all the listening parties to date.

    Fabulous Shows

I am a relatively new deadhead (5 years or so) and had never really focused on 1976 because in some ways it seemed like it was a warm up for the greatness of 1977. At first listen to the box set, I thought there were some great moments, but it really didn’t change my opinion (I admit likely because of my bias going in). However, I put the June 14 Beacon show in the regular rotation and found myself coming back to it regularly, so I decided to re-listen to the whole set and my goodness, what a great batch of shows this is. Every show is very well played and every night had greatness as well. Several of these shows are in the regular rotation now and even as a newbie, I can see how the band was progressing from these shows, to the early 77 shows (I love the Swing show), which then progress to the spring and fall 77 shows.

I have notified Jeffrey Norman and Rhino. I sent Jeffrey the logs of the LAC test results showing 80% of the June 76 files being upsampled. While he was very nice in his response, he had no explanation for the finding. Rhino has not responded to any e-mails. It is important to note that the files on both test “Clean” after downsampling to 24/96, which, likely, means the files, were originally digitized at 24/96 or digitized at 24/192 and downsampled to 24/96 for mastering. Whatever the case Rhino needs to disclose this fact on their web site or change the files for sale to 24/96.

i just received my copy. it came in an outer box that had clearly been reused. some of the old labels were torn off, others were partially covered by newer labels. the tape was poorly replaced, but worst of all, the inner box had the cellophane torn and the box was scratched.

i’m so disappointed. for $150 i expect a better product.

these are the first CDs i’ve ordered from this site...if they all come like this, i don’t know that i’ll order again.

i’ve emailed the fulfillment company. hopefully i’ll hear back soon.

I ordered this recently, since there are less than 1K to go, and I have to say, I'm really pleased with the appearance of this set. It showed up quickly, having avoided the initial rush to get it, and it's a beautiful package. Sounds good so far. I know I'll get much enjoyment out of these tunes, of course.

For those who wondered about the booklet: this is not a defect. I'm in the publishing business, and I know that most paperbacks these days are what's called "perfect bound," which means the pages are glued in. Open the book completely, crease the spine, and you'll leave a mark; open and close it enough, and the pages will start to fall out.

This booklet is more like a very slim version of an old paperback, where the pages are held by string. That means you can open it up and flip through it many times for years to come, with no worries that the pages will fall out. It's both an aesthetic decision and a practical one. So it may look weird on the spine--it's not a paperback?--but it's a quality move. Very nice, and much appreciated on my end.

Looking forward to cranking up that Crazy Fingers!

I thought she sounded great and was disappointed when she wasn’t included in 2004.
I saw the Atlanta shows, and I don’t remember if Winwood opened, probably because if he did I was still in the lot.
But, Sammy Hagar came on stage to sing Loose Lucy with Joan. That was cool. Don’t know why Sammy was at the show, or in ATL. Was Sammy Bob’s neighbor or Jerry’s in CA?

Yeah 2003 was with Joan Osborne and Winwood opening. I saw both Holmdel N.J. shows. Winwood played Gimme Some Lovin on the first night with The Dead in the first set and Low Spark the second night first set and jammed along during both night's second sets. Those were good shows. Joan was not with them in 2004 -- I missed her. She added something extra to those shows. Winwood and his band were great!

It's a toss-up between that one and the Closing of Winterland. I'm not saying anyone should listen to The Wheel intro with a parking lot balloon - but I'd understand if you did! And I certainly can't find a better post-hiatus version of The Other One. They don't just play tightly; Jerry actually catches fire. Not a wasted note by anyone on the entire song. It's as if they arranged of the improv stuff in the studio.

Wilfred T - I also do a lot of headphones listening, but when I crank it up on the family room stereo, I put on this awesome Dark Star from 10/24/71. My Uncle Gary sent me a damn-near professional copy on the Cellar Dwellers label. I don't know who they are but they release shows in limited production, usually 300 units. I have no doubt they have some kind of professional engineer master the soundboards. I can't imagine what he pays for them but they sound so good. Anyway that's the one I crank up real loud - Dark Star in Detroit. It's Motor City Madness. Nothing quite like Jerry noodling through a Dark Star at high volume throughout the room.

I need to catch up on posts. Take care Fockers.

I thought Joan did a good job all things considered. I think I liked Sunshine Garcia that sang backups with Furthur better than any Female singer with the boys. Nothing against any of the women, they just seem to be tough group for women to mesh with? Must be Bob LOL....

SAMMY HAGAR was/is? Bobs neighbior and drinking compadre. I’m not necessarily a huge Sammy fan, but I love R&R biographies and have a decent collection, and Sammies book Red is a real bueat! Great VH tales and even a couple of good Bob stories in there....think it's only like 7 or 8 bucks these days, we’ll worth!

Dick's 18 is one of my favorites too. The Other One is just explosive! Two Thumbs Way Up!! The Truckin is awesome as well. The Bertha opening has a Jerry solo which is stunning and if you listen closely you can hear the audience break out into spontaneous applause. They knew they just heard something special.

Perhaps since a lot of us are "social distancing" it might be fun to put together a ZOOM meeting for us to get together and chat about our favorite band....show...years...the new box or perhaps questions we might have for each other. It might be fun to break up the day with our families and do something we all love writing about. We can just do it in person. Just an idea. Yes I have cabin fever. Ha Ha

That is a rough story. Shameful people. My wife and I have made it a point to pay people and have asked them not to work.

I did not purchase the 76 box or I would send you a copy. If someone has not already stepped up, let me know and we will work something out.

During this quarantine, I just got around to installing my new Emotiva HDCD player. Curious to get other folks thoughts. Is it just me or is the sound quality that much better on a HDCD player. I am somewhat surprised.

Not to bang on 76, but I listened to 6/24/70 today.

So, yeah. That is why I passed on the box.

June 1976 is is a great box. Why? Because it was a band finding it's legs after a hell of a grueling tour with an insane sound system that just pushed the crew into the dirt. Mickey left, and I must admit I love the dead with just Bill but I do appreciate Micky and what he adds. But 76 was a band in small venues and feeling the funk after a 2 year break. Without ' 76 all you '77 devotees would not not be happy. June 1976 deserves the respect it's due, it's the Dead at the core. Laid back and in the pocket. AND Donna is laid back as well, so....

But it just don't work on you. My wife and I would always catch Muddy when he would come to town. After one particularly crazy good show at the Catamaran my wife commented that she wished he'd drop the song about his d**k not working. After I asked her to elaborate I explained to her that "mojo" is a magical spell he has over women, not his d**k.

Got a chance to listen to the first set yesterday while out doing last minute errands before NC shuts down Monday, and then tonight on the way to jam with my guitarist, and on the way back. Long, long second set. The Crazy Fingers Jam was awesome, then Dancin' was grooving and then Cosmic Charlie was slinky, with Donna perfectly balanced. Which reminds me, everything is perfectly balanced. This box set seems like the first time on a 2 track where Keith is mixed right up there with the guitars and drums. Betty is most known for those lovely 77 boards, but these sound better. Maybe it's the smaller rooms, but the mix is definitely more even. And there again, maybe Keith wasn't as active the next year. His tolerance for the Persian may not have been the same as Jerry's, and '77 was the start of that... But back to the show, I looked ahead on the setlist, figuring after all this madness, there should be a ballad and a Bobby rave up, but no. They drop an exploratory Help Slip Franklin's that is an all timer. This show is my current favorite in the box, with two left. But it's also replaced 6/9 Road Trips 4.5 as my favorite '76 show.

Lazy Lightning>Supplication

Comes a Time
Sugar Mag>Us Blues>Sunshine Daydream

It's interesting listening so far! :-)

It is hard to guess what is happening. My order was tracked by UPS and on 03/19/2020 it was transferred to the post office in Fontana, CA. The next day, 03/20/2020 the package was processed by international carrier, suggesting that shipping from the US would be by someone other than UPS (possibly USPS). That aside, it seems reasonable in this time of crisis and chaos with major restrictions on international flights that there will be delays in the shipping process. Indeed on 03/27/2020 the UPS tracking again showed that the package was again processed by international carrier, so it appears to be stuck waiting for a flight out of California. Once it does get airborne, upon arrival (in this case the Netherlands) it will then spend some time with the customs who will decided how much I will have to pay in tax, duty and administration costs before it enters the local postal system. As this all typically takes 1-2 weeks, I don't expect to see my box anytime soon. Sadly I can do nothing but wait patiently.

Thank you for the response Jack, that was very nice of you and I applaud your handling of the virus and the way you treat your employees. You are the only one who has even mentioned or responded to my post so in my world, you are a good person and a true deadhead. Thanks again for the offer, I would love a copy of this box, but I just don't see it happening. It's weird because of the Families First coronavirus response act that was passed, they should have been forced to pay me sick time, due to the fact that my doctor said I was to self quarantine, but I guess they aren't going to play by those new rules. 10 million dollar company too, greedy bastards.

Unkle Sam, as a fellow COPD sufferer, I can understand and sympathise with your situation. Neither of us are eligible to join Jim's "Hero rip" club. As you may have read on here a few days ago, I was able to avoid the work/ no work dilemma by reaching my pensionable age. This age (66) together with the chronic lung condition puts me in the higher risk category. This doesn't mean that I have an increased likelihood of catching the virus but it certainly increases the risk of serious consequences if I was to contract it - and there is no more serious long-term consequence than death. I don't fear death, but I sure as hell am not ready to shuffle off this mortal coil just yet - my box hasn't arrived yet. Of course, due to my situation I was able to order a copy. That you were not, due in large part to the greed and insensitivity of your employer is an indictment of the system that determines so many aspects of our lives. As this crisis develops further, we will see a split between the socially responsible and those driven by greed and selfishness. Unfortunately you will not be the only one to suffer the consequences of this crisis and one can only hope that you and others in your situation come out of this without too much damage to both you health and your financial situation. Keep posting, take care and stay strong.

People's true natures are going to be revealed by this crisis, and as ever, those suffering from health problems or who are economically disadvantaged are going to suffer most. I hope you have, or can access, a support network, and that you continue to post here on a regular basis.

uncle john, I don't know the answer to your question. Do you have a link to the interview?

Me and the old lady watched a 2 hour pbs special on Miles Davis the other night, which inspired me to go back and listen to On the Corner and Bitches Brew while we cooked up some dinner last night. I must say i'm more of a Kind of Blue, Miles Smiles guy, but i do appreciate that he was pushing his music out there. Bitches Brew was from 1970!

In other news, a link to bandemic - a recent stream from Medeski Scofield Marin and Murphy - Wood must have been busy. Some great jams here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i63c3Wg5CEs&t=2712s

I was so transfixed by wanting them to release the 1980 Warfield/Radio City box that I forgot about those 1970 acoustic shows....both coming up on big anniversary. I know they've been saying the original multi-track were lost but if they still have the 2-track recording sound as good as The Warfield cd released last year, then there should be no problem? Tapes availability were spotty for 1970 I heard.

Any thoughts? Educate me, I'm 5 years new to this party!

I've actually had daydreams of them finding the Radio City and Warfield tapes which might have been cut up for Dead Set and Reckoning. They get pieced back together, great audience tapes are matrixed in and complete box sets with all the goodies are released! Being self quarantined in New York . . .. I am daydreaming of this again. It's like finding The Lost Ark! Jerry, Pig, Keith guide us from the otherside . . ..

The rumor has always been the Warfield/ Radio City tapes are gone or were recorded over. Not sure, Dave could definitely clear that up.

A couple of facts we know for sure. They rereleased Dead Set in the mid 2000s with a second CD of never before material from this run.

In addition, they also rereleased Dead Head in the early 2000s with additional bonus material. So, there has to be something there in order for them to make these two things happen.

The RSD release from last year was part of the returned Betty boards. From the lists I have seen, the first two sets from October 9 and 10, 1980, were the only 1980 dates in the returned stash.

Be well people. Very tough times out there.

who may have lost their livelihood or worse. Many of us are in similar straits. I'm self-employed, sole proprietorship, and Q1 was horrible. All work scheduled for Q2 has been cancelled. Nobody can see beyond that.

I do have the advantage of a road bike and the means to put it to use, plus some fresh produce for the evenings. Plus guitars and amps. And the '76 box. (6-19-76 brought back keen memories of the show with that Help medley opening the first set. Love it when the GD open a show with long jams. I see that on 6-10-76 for tonight's enjoyment that Jer does a nearly 10-minute Sugaree in the second song of the first set. That bodes well...)

But the man leading me to the Promised Land sits on my shelf, in abundance, rarin' to go when I have the need.

His name is PIGPEN!!

Chiming in with my favourite Miles Davis albums:

Kind of Blue
Filles De Kilimanjaro
E.S.P.
In A Silent Way
'Round About Midnight
Sorcerer

Kind of that mid-career pocket. I don't like the business of bebop, and frankly On The Corner sounds to me like New York City traffic (sans coronavirus). Hectic and stressed, I can't listen to that one ever again.

But to each his own. Been on a serious Doors kick this weekend, letting the shaman lead the way.

I had a dream last week. I was hanging with Jer. Someone said they were going to a Doors concert. And I thought in my dream that that sounded weird. I kept wondering, 'Why does that sound weird?' When I awoke, I of course remembered Jim's last bath.

Let me add this: I once had a dream I was driving a convertible. And in the back seat was Jimi, Jerry and Roy Buchanan. All perfectly normal, just taking a drive. Then I woke up and really had to wonder about my own issues. For about a minute.

I had just come off of a 3+ month stretch of a slower than usual workload and the middle of this month marked the beginning of what was supposed to be my busy season and chance to get back on track.

As luck would have it my last day of work was Friday the 13th. My final check arrived a couple of days ago and my entire industry is completely shut down.

I've been blessed with some help from family, friends and even complete strangers where I can hunker down and do my part to slow the spread.

As with everybody else I guess, there is a mood of melancholy and confusion around these parts nd thankfully for the abundance of Grateful Dead to listen to. The recent show I listened that really struck a chord in me was 3/28/73 Dave's Picks 16 Springfield. In a tour and year of superb playing it seems to me that Jerry really digs in deeply into expressiveness and emotion in his playing. His guitar really stands out in the mix and has a tonality that really cuts through. In my somewhat familiarity with this era, this show is a real sleeper that grows on you.

Thank you Dave for the Picks, Mark, Jeffrey, Betty, Dan, Lesley and everybody who was a part of the music as it happened and the releases as they happen. Thank you to the cool people here for your generosity towards those of us who crave this music but struggle. In this social distance environment it's become more important and a necessary escape as ever.

Stay safe.

My favorite version of Morning Dew, was the first time I saw the Dead play it. I had been seeing the Dead for over 6 years, when they finally broke it out on 9/11/81. The Greek Theatre was electric that night, in more ways than one. By the time Garcia sang , "I guess it does'nt matter anyway" you could hear a pin drop in that place. What a moment, I'll never forget it!

I have never met a Morning Dew I didn't like.

Nice version, Billy.. I'm not seeing any boards on Archive.org for this show. It's too bad this period was under-recorded.

to all of you who have responded with good wishes, box set downloads, offers to rip and burn cd's, all of it, you people are the cream of the crop. Angry Jack Straw, you, my brother, started the whole thing with your comment, I thank you and if there is anything I can do for any of you, please do not hesitate to ask. I did get a copy downloaded from Mr. Jeff Smith, thank you very much Jeff, we transfer worked and now I have a superb copy of the 76 box, very well done and I can not thank you enough. I am now in the middle of this box, very nice, very mellow, Jerry lives within us all and will make this a much better self isolation, I just love his playing on this box set. I wish I could mention all of you who did respond personally and reply to all of you with the same heartfelt warmth that you have all shown me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will now gather a list of responders and others who have offered music to help me heal, Dennis even sent me a bunch of other tunes including the Cream Albert Hall box with 4 shows from that 68 run, very impressive.
On the work front, I have applied for unemployment benefits anyway and it is pending resolution, I did certification for the first week and the website took all my information, so I am hopeful that the state will give me the unemployment due to my doctors recommendation, which it should from all that I have read. I will not give up, I will continue to pursue this until the end, or until they tell me no, you ain't getting nothing. Then I will appeal again to a higher authority. Perhaps I should get the press involved, I would love to out the greedy bastards who put me in this situation. According to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act they should have put me on sick leave and paid me my entire salary as I have a Doctor's excuse, and I may pursue that option via a lawyer if this unemployment does not work out. You try and do the right thing by an employer and they shaft you, so much for loyalty, I will never put an employer before myself again, ever. It' tuff tho, my immediate supervisor and his boss, all approved the unemployment, it was stopped by their boss, the high and mighty who do not have to worry about things like rent, food, dead music ;), which to me is just as important as food or a roof over my head. I will keep you all up to date and again, Thank you all for your support and thank you Jeff Smith for the download and Dennis for the downloads and the links to other music especially the Cream. I love you all, keep on Truckin' and be safe out there. More to come as I receive the outcome of these current filings.
