WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

This box set is an abomination. First of all, it's the size of a damn phone book. Each show is in a separate, gigantic case that makes no sense at all. How many trees died for this? I can't even put it in my car, there's no room for it. If I do want to listen in the car, I have to transfer the discs into some other sleeve for transport. The powers that be obviously never took this into consideration. One disc was flopping around lose in the box when it arrived. Somebody really screwed the pooch on this one.

The outer box, which is always a nice surprise and nice touch was pretty well beat up, and showed signs of dampness. Inside, everything was perfect! I've got all my discs ripped, listened to most of 5/5 for the anniversary, and had Cornell in Amazon Prime, so listened to most of it at work. I'd been saving the first set of Cornell since the box was announced, as I lost my copy of the first set years ago, and my favorite mix was that particular one that was my first source, it had exceedingly loud levels, but perfectly clear, and with a good amount of reverb that sweetened the mix. Anyway, so even on the tiny work speakers, I was quite pleased to find the first set just perfectly set up that scrumtrilescent second set. Jack Straw was as good as the Florida rager from 5/21 that was my favorite for years. Loser was fantastic. But I've saved the big stuff for listening breaks between rehearsal tomorrow night. New Haven is a great show, the first set is particularly good. Reggae Bertha is kinda weird to me, I always felt the Buffalo one was strange, but hearing this made me think they were just going for a new feel for the song. Glad it didn't stick. Estimated was Excellent! I know, it was played every single night this tour, but this one had great dynamics and the reggae groove is deep and works. That was as far as I got, though I had a test listen to St Stephen earlier, too. That was fantastic. Very pleased with this box set! Was not too pleased with the stress and bother that went into ordering and receiving, but upon delivery, I'm extremely satisfied! Thanks to Dave, Dr Rhino, Mark, Rob Eaton, Betty, Jeff Norman, Plangent Processes, and everyone else involved!

Cause this thing is beautiful. And pulses the divine. The desert island would be well-equipped. There is essentially, one of everything. And monster Ones at that. There's no denying it. That Boston Eyes; right around 1:30, in the intro. It's a neat little hook. Wharf Rat??? Forget it. For The Ages. That one has shoe-horned me into years of days, as my alarm. A gentle, familiar, steadfast epic slide back into the next state. I'm temporarily fighting with myself over that 5/5 Scarlet Fire as an extremely strong contender. Whatever. There's so much to devour. Just pleased they kicked ass in getting this monument of sonic and cultural history into the fan's hands. e-high five to All! Sixtus

You have to be careful with this box. But if you treat it well, it should hold up. They did have to go big though.. it's the Cornell box. (I've heard one mention it as the Cornish Hen Box). Anyway.. they had to go big. Gotta admit, it's beautiful.. so which has a better presentation, this or the Red Rocks box? The shipping box for July 78 is a nice touch, but the laser cutout landscapes are pretty cool. I'm glad they went big.. this thing is a form of folk art.

Sorry to say disappointed.--Poor Packaging and QA
Not happy with the way the CDs are secured in that a number of them have worked their way loose and were found flopping around inside the cardboard carrier. Probably the poorest method oF CD storage as they scuff every time you removed them from the cardboard cut out. I guess that is a minor issue. The bigger issue is my set's Boston show.I received two CD 1s and one CD three. I expect the proper disc to be sent to me post haste and without hassle but expectations aren't always reality. In my opinion this is shoddy quality control on a fairly pricey item and inexcusable. I guess I will wait to hear back. Sorry to be a downer but this whole thing has really turned into a downer from the ordering process to the immediate devaluation of the "limited edition" to this now shoddy QA. I can only hope my issue is handled expediently.

I wonder if perhaps the "system" thinks that most of the sets are allocated through all of those that are in carts of transactions which can't be completed.I got as close as putting in all my information only to be kicked back to the cart...this has been going on for hours now. As far as caring about this mess, I don't think that TPTB do or will. We are a "captive" audience. They shit on us and we keep coming back...

The fact that the Cornell show can be easily pre-ordered on Amazon while we stew over here is almost doubly infuriating. And this is overpriced, as many of these have been with the exception of the '72 box.

Thanks for the tip Scott!! I just picked up the 5LP set on Amazon. Doesn't look like Amazon has the multi-show box though. Too bad. GDnet should just outsource their entire ridiculous shitshow of purchase/fulfillment to Amazon -- or to almost literally anyone else who would do a better job than we're seeing here today.

First my account (which I haven't used in years) was disabled and I needed to re-register. The I got four sets in my cart. The I corrected this. Then I tried to check out. and here I sit trying to spend money on music which was publicly available until the greed took over which is about the same time my account went dormant. I don't know why I fell for yet another cash grab. I'm out. I'll dig out my CD-R copies of the show I downloaded from the archive years ago and wish all those struggling with the mess well.

I've been trying for hours now on this pathetic excuse for an e-commerce site. Might as well go back to Mail order for these releases. The issue seems to be when the cart tries to figure out the taxes for your state from the delivery info dialog box. That is if you can get that far without getting bounced or forbidden. I've been staring at a spinning circle for a while now waiting for tax info to fill in so I can move to the payment options. Add more clouds or something this seems like an easy fix.

But if you get a hold of me I can help you run a business much better. THE DEAD ALWAYS GOT PROPS FOR THEIR BUSINESS MODEL. IT APPEARS YOU CARE NOTHING ABOUT THAT. I would love to have a seaside chat that fixed some of the buiness problems you and you people create. DEAD HEADS SHOULD BE REVERED NOT BROKEN on a computer chasing what was thiers to begin with.

Maybe they have a release date in May so they can get all the orders sorted by then.On hopes Warners is reading all of this and the other comments sites. Okay so their store can't handle it but what about some communication with their base. How hard would it be to send an email to the list with a simple and clear explanation of what is happening, is it sold out, are thousand of copies sitting in our carts, etc. and what to do from here. Do we all stop for an hour or so while they fix the problem? I once managed to get through to the checkout stage to find nearly 20 copies in my cart and git the error message when I tried to update. Three times got to the final check out confirm order when it reverted to the Add to Cart page. This should not be hard, just fix it or we will just forget it and download the Flac files from Pirate Bay.

Well, after 3 hours of pure agonizing digital torture, finally got thru...but it patched me thru to the RHINO store? So let's hope that's a legitimate site. Hang in there, guys. It's NOT sold out. However,Tech guys need to be severely reprimanded. This is not how to treat captive, diehard fans. And it's not like this is a new thing, there's ALWAYS been crashiness with the shitty servers or bad coding, whatever. Do better, guys. Don't be greedy. You know the demand is out there and there's no need for limiting pressings. DO BETTER!

Like most of us I have been to countless shows and own most of what has been released including all box sets. My wife and I spent most the day being disconnected from the phone system and getting all the way to checkout only to have everything go wrong. I wanted 1 box and 1 vinyl. I took a screen shot of my attempted order and mailed it to them. Perhaps that will count for something. What is the matter with these people. A buddy at work did not understand my anger and finally I said "this is not about business this is about family and our family being abused". Still not sure he understood but THEY should. Some nice 86 shows from the HJK just got uploaded to YouTube. I was at this run of shows. Good times with good people-family. Let's hope the powers that be recognize the magnitude of this mistake and make it right.

Keep trying!. I've just managed to complete my order of the 11-CD boxed set, and I received a confirmation email, after many many failed attempts. This has been a debacle for sure, but at least it's not yet sold out. If it's any help, I found Chrome worked best for me; I was also trying MS Edge and Firefox. The boxed set is over-priced (particularly when I factor in the almost inevitable customs charges to the UK), but once in a while you've got to just pull the trigger. Good luck everyone!

I finally was able to get to my cart, delete the 2nd copy that was put there due to multiple rejections, and fill out all but the delivery method, which was greyed out with a "waiting" circle. I dutifully waited and then got timed out. 30 minutes later I got that far again but Delivery was still not functional. Now I can't even get to my cart. Hopefully someone may have taken the cart down to fix the problem Hope so. These are trying times, indeed.
