Okay, folks, here's the plan as we roll over into the next stage of vining. Each vine will have its own topic. As has been noted once or twice before, Iz and I are the only ones who can start topics. Hence, if somebody has a vine they want to start, post the particulars here. Then Iz or I will cruise by, start the new topic, and delete the post from the New Vines area so it doesn't get unwieldy. We'll see how this goes...

    Crazy Quilt Vine #1
This vine has 11 discs, 8 different artists, some are SDB, most are audience recordings, some are collaborators with members of the Grateful Dead, and one is a mystic who was admired by the band (and received a dedication of 'He's Gone' at one of the Dead's shows.) not having heard of Red Robin/Parrot before, I did a little googling, and let's just say I have the sense that this is such a contentious legal nightmare at the present time that I don't want to go there. The Vineyard exists and survives because we don't vine commercial releases. Bootleg commercial releases add a layer of legal murk, but I don't want to jeopardize our little vining scene by setting this one up. I cordially invite the more knowledgeable to point out possibly vineable sources for the same material. Thanks for understanding.

I appreciate the explanation...makes more sense now. To be honest, I've never had a problem downloading from archive.org...shows usually take 10-15 mins, some as fast as 3-4. Spring Ratdog shows this year have been lacking on archive.org and sugarmegs. Trying to figure out how I can convert .flac, .shn and .wma files to .mp3 just so i can burn them and add to my archive. Thanks again for the help ..even a blind man knows when the sun is shinin'...you can feel it!..

    Hey NYsteve
    1. Last I heard, archive.org had suspended uploading of Dead shows, but I'm not sure if the ban is still on.2. mp3 is a convenience format, not a high fidelity format, and is not used when sound quality is valued. I use mp3 for my Old Time Radio collection, but that's mostly spoken-word material recorded in the 30's and 40's (BTW, archive.org has a fantastic assortment of public-domain OTR shows available for free download). mp3 sacrifices some of the file's information in favor of maximum compression, and is therefore referred to as a "Lossy" format, whereas FLAC (short for "Free Lossless Audio Codec") and SHN (which I believe is short for "Shorten") are lossless compression formats, which are capable of restoring exact copies of the original file when decompressed. The down side is that they require much larger files, which puts them out of reach of dail-up users, rendering mp3 the only workable alternative over dail-up. Even then, downloading a whole show is quite a chore. I downloaded a whole show on mp3 from archive.org a few years ago, and it took me several hours a night over 3 or 4 nights to get it all, and after all that you can hear "swishing" all the way through it, which is an artifact of the mp3 compression. You should check out The Vineyard on this site, where The Rhinos have graciuosly allowed show trading by mail- slow but good! -Tommo

thanks Ltapilot for the most kind offer. In fact Deadicated has picked up on the Felt Forum vine already so that is taking care of. The other one I was chasing was not the 4 Europe Shows Vine, but the 71 Tour Vine (4/29, 10/21, 10/30).

Hi - Not sure how to do this, or if this is the right place, BUT, I am looking for audio of JGB and Bob Weir Band from Cheney WA, 10/27/78. Anyone have it and care to send it to me? I'll happily burn and share, if the vine concept is carefully explained to me... Thanks everyone for directing me to The Vineyard... Larry

Let it be late '71!!! From 10/19 to 12/31 I am extremely thin. There are, of course, favorites that I would like that I've had in part on tape for many, many years, but to have the whole would be the sweetest. Deadicated "Where does the time go?"

I had a Betty Board(I think) of a show from Ann Arbor where they played this and on the whole tape Keith was mixed heavy and just kicked! Looking forward to this. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

I would delete a few shows from the vine, the Felt Forum run as that has been vined by Yamadog, perhaps another show or two from other vines, the Dick's Picks portion of 10/31.

Love 71/72/77/78, but I've always been a fan of the post-hiatus 76 shows as well. Especially the second half of the year, after they had really got back into full stride. Some of the meandering 2nd sets were never duplicated IMO. Personal fav is 10-9-76, which ended up as a DP, but I know there were some other great shows (especially Sept-Oct 76). If you've got any and care to vine 'em, I'd be estatic. Peace
