Blank CD-R’s are also thinner.
CD-R plastic used to be polycarbonate with BPA in it. Maybe when BPA was removed from all products was also when the switch to thinner CD plastic was also made. Maybe bulk polycarbonate costs more to make when it doesn’t have BPA in it, so to balance the additional cost the CD was made thinner.
All speculation, I don’t know for sure.

There's a title to a post called Re: Moving Pictures that has nothing to do with the Rush album, and there is another title to a post called Dark Star that has nothing to do with the song.

Streaming - not for me at this time. I only listen to the Dead and there is nothing that can replace my phone system where I have every release in chronological order plus soundboards in a second chronologically ordered list. To my knowledge there's still a ton of Grateful Dead limited edition material that you just can't get on the streaming services. Once in a while I'll pull out something different, but it doesn't make up for nearly the time I spend listening to the Dead so it would just be a waste of money. My last phase was the Rolling Stones leading up to 50th anniversary. That went on for about two years before I re-engaged the Grateful Dead.

Would love to know how artists and record companies make money anymore with all the streaming in piracy. It doesn't even sound possible to me but maybe I just needed properly explained. If I had to guess, I would say there is a direct correlation between streaming and piracy, and the high price of concert tickets. I have a feeling artist don't make nearly what they used to off of their recorded music from the studio oh, so they have to make their money on the road. But as far as I'm concerned I've seen all the good groups and I'd be surprised if a new one came along that caught my interest.

Dick's Picks 23 is rocking my optimal right now. Bobby comes through loud and clear on me and my uncle, and Tennessee Jed is no slouch either. And there's a 40-minute other one coming up... And then I'm going to listen to November 14th 1971, because I rarely go to that one and the ravings are out.

On this day in GD history, they only played four shows...

1969 Lanai Theater, CA: Pig-fest with an Easy Wind, Next Time You See Me, Boss Man, Good Lovin', and a 48min Lovelight, for those into that sort of thing. However, I can't seem to find a decent recording - even the Charlie Miller transfer sounds muddy and warbly.

1971 Austin, TX: So hot, they released it as a Road Trips... Fall of 71 is smoking! 1st set Dark Star>El Paso>Dark Star, interesting and well played 2nd set that just EXPLODES into NFA>GDTRFB>NFA!

1972 OK City: Fall of 72 - the greatest period of Dead ever? I don't know, but I know it's in the conversation... All around solid show - 1st set begins with Bertha, Beat It On Down the Line, Bird Song...BBB... Bobby is mixed WAY high in the beginning of Bertha, and you can't really hear the rest of the band, but it's pretty cool to hear Bobby isolated, and the mix settles in about half-way through. 2nd set features a 30-min Playin, followed by Big RxR, which I think is a pretty great spot for that tune. I used to dutifully slog my way through every Lovelight, until the recently-released one where Pigpen talks about getting a gun to shoot a woman while he says something to this woman about, "Get out of here, C#%T!!" That put me off "Love"light (and to an extent, Pigpen) for good.

And yes--I, too, have had some damaged/defective discs the past few years, after having nothing but good luck for decades.

This October through December of 1973 stretch might be the Dead's best ever, to my ears. My notes for DaP 5 (11/17/73) ask if disc 2 is the best hour of GD EVER. I'm seeing a lot of 'A+' marks in my notes for this fall run.

All is better now but the bills, over a quarter of a million for hospital stay, how can they justify these prices? one bill is for a nurse, not a doctor, to visit weekly, she is here for about 10 mins, that will be 189.50$ please. Medicaid, here we come. Never in my life have I not been able to pay a bill, but this one I guess the state will have to pick up. In this state, you can't have any assets over 3,000$ to qualify for Medicaid, so now we must become wards of the state. nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile and thank the universe that all pulled thru. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not that great and there will be many more visits to the specialists and the primary dr that will only increase this financial burden, but how do you put a cost on a loved ones life? You can't. I guess this will be the last year that I will be able to justify the expense of a Dave's Pick subscription, the state only accepts expenses that are essential and necessary, and according to them, the calming, therapeutic effect of Grateful Dead music does not qualify.
One thing is for sure, if you do not have insurance in this country, do not get sick, it will ruin you plus you will receive sub standard care, as you are now officially a "charity case". How did it get this bad? Why have all the health care professionals let this happen? What's worse is everyone knows it's all fucked up, but yet, they allow it to continue and do nothing but say "it's all messed up but that's what we have to work with". I do believe that the one candidate that stands up and says enough is enough about this health care crisis would win any election hands down, unfortunately, the insurance companies and the drug companies and the medical professionals will never let that happen, all in the name of greed.

Yesterday was Give to the Max Day here in Minnesota; people are encouraged to use that site that day to give money to various MN charities and non-profits. So that day always reminds me to come on here and gently encourage people to go make donations to The Rex Foundation and Archive.org, two non-profits near and dear to Deadheads' hearts. First.. USam, I'm sorry to hear this news.. the silver lining is they seem to have been discharge from the hospital.. Let's hope for as full, complete and speedy recovery as possible and sending positive vibes your way. I get what you're saying though.. these issues affect us all, no one is immune and hospitalization often leaves us at the bottom of a valley with a huge financial hill to climb. My dad spent a couple months in the Neuro ICU a few years ago, the final bill was more than $1M. He's ok now though thanks to a very skilled neurosurgeon in Richmond (and the resulting proud owner of my Fillmore West 69 the complete recordings box set, we called it even St. Stephen [kidding of course]).

Enjoying the positive vibes here lately too, and some I think very honest and on point reviews of recent releases. Nice deep dive on '73. I see the points made on the good and not so glowing comments too.. there is some unevenness to '73, especially in the first sets. Sometimes they seemed to somehow fit ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag (or more accurately 4 1/2 hours of music on a three disc release). 1973 always has that work in progress feel to it, but it also opens the door to some of the more creative, free flowing jammy GD that grew that year and seemed to peek (at least to me) in 74, losing some of it's luster during hiatus. 73 contains it's own bag of tricks..

Finally.. just delving into the song list on the January 73 Jerry release announced this week. I'm salivating.. there's some takes on songs I have never heard them play here.. and it's a Rex/Betty multi-track? Say what! These had to have been returned as part of the lost stash. Aren't we a lucky bunch?

I wake up each morning, eagerly hoping to learn of a release from 1968, so imagine my disheartenment(?) when I saw that the Origins graphic novel special edition would have unreleased music from 1968 ONLY IN LP FORMAT! I hope that the powers-that-be see fit to make a CD version of the Origins set, or release the music on a disc. Please!

The artwork on the singles collection is so beautiful and original. I have purchased them all, even though I don't have any means to play them! Perhaps one of those artists could be hired for the Dave's Picks series, or the mandate (if it exists--I doubt it) that the DaP art must be skeleton-themed could be relaxed? Or maybe there could be beards on the covers, but no skeletons? :) First-world problems, to be sure . . .

Had a good time with DP 23 today, and finally listened to that 40 minute Other One. Twice. Good stuff. I say screw all this waiting around and just start producing and pressing CDs. Start with the Dark Star shows. Then the Bird Song shows. Then the rest of 68 - 74..........Well, I could go on, but this ain't gonna happen.

Sounds like another instance of having to make more copies to replace the ones that disappeared at the warehouse.
Maybe other people who are still waiting will start getting theirs.

I've been on a little prog-rock kick lately, Yes and Rush have had a bit of play, good stuff. Sometimes that sound hits the spot for me.

I've picked up a few new cds recently and was thinking that I would need to have some time to give everything a few listens before getting anything else, and then I see the references here to Garcia Live 12 and that idea comes to an end. That looks smoking.

After finishing listening to Disc 3 of Dave's whatever from 11/17/72 Wichita, that has 5 songs from the show before, 11/15/72 Oklahoma City, I realized that i had 11/18/72 Hofheinz Pavilion on CD (I think a record store release). It's not the full show and only one disc..... Could we see a 11/19/72 Hofheinz Pavilion release which is an amazing show, for Dave's 34 with the bonus disc being from 11/18/72 or 11/15/72 of songs that haven't been released yet?? Over served in Rhode Island... bob t

This is awesome! We have so many official shows available now to listen to and more on the way.
It used to be that there were a few good releases, which I burned into my synapses by listening to so many times, to supplement my hissy tape collection.
I now have 4-5 TB’s of SBD’s from the torrents, but hardly ever listen to them because I have so many (but still not enough) official releases. There are so many (but still not enough) official releases that I don’t have enough time to burn each one into my synapses (but I’m definitely trying).

But as far as I know, there won't be any late-1972 tapes returned. That era's tapes never disappeared; the Dead either had them on hand, or they did not exist.

....my mom visited Amish country with my late dad. Said her eyes were opened.
Edit. Saw Bob T's post. My mom loves Neil Diamond. Took her to see him three years ago during his last tour. Presently, he was correct. No Diamond tours currently. (It was a really good show btw).

In the late 90’s someone (not a Deadhead, but a young person that listened to rock n roll) told me that Neil Diamond put on an excellent show.

Unnumbered Dave's are promo copies typically for employees and should not be sent out to people who subscribe or purchased a la cart. But given the way things are going around here, I guess you take what you can get.

By the way, where is Bolo, did he get lost in the Warehouse?

There's a big Amish/Mennonite presence where I live, mostly farmers and craftsman. For the most part, they still use horse drawn buggies (black with orange reflective triangles on the rear). You see them from time to time driving their buggies on the roads to town or to church on Sundays.. pretty cool flashback, you have to slow down to like 8 miles an hour until there is safe passage. On a related note, one of my friends from college decided not to join the rat race after school and started an organic farm that still uses horse drawn plows, etc. Not much difference except he uses electricity, listens to a lot of Reggae and GD and as dreads instead of short hair and Amish beards.

Sort of cool, I doubt if many Amish are Deadheads though.. except maybe that one in the movie Kingpin (Randy Quaid).

Did you happen to walk up to one of the tougher young men in the buggy and smoosh his ice cream cone on his nose and forehead? I once saw a documentary on the Amish in Pennsylvania where that happened. By Amish law they are not permitted to respond with violence, however if one does, it is perceived as a mating call. An Amishman who brakes this law can expect at least one pretty young Amish woman to expose her breasts while washing in an open outdoor bathing area.
