When our previous topic hit the 1,000-response mark, sleazy behavior by politicians was eliciting a certain amount of non-astonishment.
Trouble ahead indeed
For CU. Blowing a 28 point lead to Kansas in the 4th quarter? yikes..

Hawkins get fired yet?
I sat thru the first 3 quarters of the CU game, on a beautiful day in Lawrence, then bailed with the Buffs up by 28. By the time I found an empty barstool at Fre State to order an IPA, some Jayhawk fan shouts that the game is tied.... KU did come back and win, for the biggest comeback in their history. I hope coach Dan and AD Mike are TOAST today in Boulder.
In a tribute to Johnman, and an honor I'm sure, I poured myself a Copperhead Ale and served a gooey chocolate brownie before heading out to rake and bag leaves!!
I'd prefer not to discuss the sad state of our political treachery, but the Republicans again have pulled the wool over many US citizens, with corporate funding and an endless media blitz.
Well it's about time...
Dan Hawkins is finally out, in Boulder: The Daily Camera, Denver Post and CBS 4, Denver, are reporting he will be replaced by Brian Cabral. Good luck Buffs this week hosting the Cyclones.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
35 yrs ago today, on Lake Superior. All 29 hands went down with the ship, their bodies never recovered.
The Gordon Lightfoot song was a number 1 hit almost exactly a year later? Why have I thought for the past 34 yrs that he was singing about a ship that went down decades before he wrote the song? Guess I wasn't keeping up with the news as well as I thought in those days...
T.W.o.t.E.F.
Same here Gratefuldean. I always thought the "wreck" went down in the 20's....I was probably associatin' it with F.Scott Fitzgerald....Keep on truckin'
Im from Michigan (Detroit Area) The Bells will ring.
Been there to honor.The fallen.
And still remember that day.
A cousin turned down the work.
To close for hunting season.
So many thoughts on this side.
Blessings to the Families.

The whole Edmund Fitzgerald thing has always freaked me out
There was a thing on TV, 60 Minutes I think, about 10 years ago that went into the whole thing in detail. As I understand it, to this day no one knows why the ship sank; it was a good, newer ship with a good crew who knew what they were doing.
What I didn't know until I saw this was that it was named after a guy who was still living, like the owner of the shipping company or something, who was so proud of the ship, and the whole thing broke his heart for the rest of his life.
and of course
I can never watch these things without screaming at the TV No! No! Stay in port! as the Big Fitz is pulling away from the dock...
it's ok marye
I can remember my mom and I yelling at Capt. Kirk "pick up the phaser!!!"
Yelling at the TV
knowing it won't help, seems to be a time honored tradition...sorry, I got sidetracked and away from the tragedy...my apologies
Yelling at
inanimate objects is something I think we've all been guilty of at some point or another...
Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.
Yes indeed Mr Pid
Just ask my wife...she's been yelling at me for decades ;-)
Trouble at Camp Zoe
I know a lot of folks here are big fans of Schwagstock, so you might want to be aware of this:
Camp Zoe, Site of Schwagstock, Facing Seizure After Drug Investigation
will there be a Thanksgiving show?
Schwag has been playing in KC on Thanksgiving night for many years: we'll see next week!
What a long strange trip it's been
there was no mention
of of any thanksgiving cancellations or the annual rallies and fests.
Shazam !
I see Thanksgiving Schwag is ON for the KC Uptown, and that they'll also be in Santa Cruz & South Lake Tahoe, CA, in early December, performing as JGB .

Camp Zoe is located south of Salem MO, on Hwy 19, in a beautiful region known as the Ozarks.
I've canoed and camped along the Current River many times, both as a chapperone for youth groups and with my family. The Current River is a cool clean spring-fed stream known for it's clarity and trout-fishing.

autorities still looking for the miners, they are reluctant to drill as they believe there is pockets of methane gas down there its not looking good for the missing mimers.they have managed to drill a small hole and they are sending down a robot who is just gonna poke around.
Sadly it appears
all miners are no longer with us a second explosion has ripped the mine apart and it looks like there is no chance of survivors.Blessings and love to all miners and their families.
God be with the miners and their families.
I lived in the coal fields of southwestern VA for 8 years and I learned what hard working folks miners are. I'm always sad when I hear of another mining disaster.
yep me too
Hokie there has been far too many over the years surely this shouldnt be happening in this day and age!
In good news
cuz we all need some. this one is a miracle really.3 teenagers were found in their little aluminum boat in the southern Pacific. They had been lost for 50 days and their families had given them up for dead. They survived by eating a dead seagull they found, some fish, and by collecting rainwater in coconut shells.

The Doors
I had the good fortune to see Jim Morrison with the Doors at Cleveland Public Hall: I still get a chuckle from the lyric he shouted out during 'Soul Kitchen" about wanting another cigarette. Several cigs, lighters, and packs of smokes came flying up on stage!!

He was certainly a wild performer. Too bad he was unable to control himself with his alcohol consumption. My sister, as a University of Michigan rep in 1967, said he downed a bottle of whiskey during a limo ride from Detroit airport to Ann Arbor: not sure if he ever made it onstage that night, for Michigan's Homecoming Dance!

i just read the death toll ts insane fighting fire with fire sure there has gotta be a better way.
I love Billy but I don't agree with his statement about Furthur
My favorite thing about Furthur is that they are completely unpredictable. Plus with a bunch of new songs that are really good, reviving old songs we haven't heard in decades, bringing in Dylan, RatDog, Phil and Friends, Ryan Adams and some other covers, I mean heck, to me that is doing some very "interesting things with the music".
Same could be said with Rythm Devils and 7 Walkers. It's all great stuff and I am grateful we get all this awesome music still. Let's hope it continues strong into 2011 and beyond!
"It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"
Did you see
The whole interview, or just the excerpt on jambands.com? Sounded harsher to me in the out-of-context excerpt than it did in the full interview. But I'm with you, I don't agree with the Billy's assessment of Furthur (nor his apparently high opinion of Warren Haynes in the context of the Dead), but I think that he that should be well-pleased with 7 Walkers...one of my favorite studio albums of the year.
Dead Archive grant under fire
A link to Sen Tom Coburn's 2010 waste report, itself probably an example of wasteful spending. Interesting that the report cites the "net worth" of "two prominent band members" (Jerry and Phil) without noting that one of them has been dead for 15 yrs. Ahhhhh...

Stone Soup (Plastics m'boy, plastics!)
A story on NPR was quite shocking about the recycling of e-waste. Earlier this sumer I ws thinking bout buying a kindle and stp buying books to be more eco-friendly. Lilly reminded me about the waste created by these efforts. Well I just heard the story on NPR and I was truly shocked! Shocked!
I don't know all the names and facts but got the gist. When you "recycle" (as a lot of us do) a full 80% is promptly shipped to China and Africa. In China there are whole mid-sized cities where they are cooking down the old components in big vats like soup and tobe in that atmosphere gives one immediate horrible headaches and the workers there are coming up with massive cancer clusters trying to leech out the valuable trace minerals from the circuit boards. I might have some of th tech stuff wrong, but the gist is horrifyingly correct..
In Ghana and other western african countries they are unvolvd in reproducing the old recycled product into a new product, advertising it as new! They get some of the motherboards with old information on them. Information thievery is pretty big over there and they used to get about $25 for an intact memory boards but now they have smartened up and are getting $300 for each one with the raw info intact.
The good news? There s a caped crusader, whose name I forget, putting together a bunch of recyclers who won't just profit shipping this stuff offshore. They will have to meet rigorous and policed standards.
The most crazy thing is that is it is highly toxic to make these things. It is not toxic during their useful lives (so far, that we know of) and it is is highly toxic at the recycling endpoint.
And, yes, children are involved in the very end process, going through e-dumps and bashing old tubes for tiny bits of precious metals that remain.
I know I didn't get this all right but it makes me think that I might not be so totally unhip without my kindle and I-pod and droid and blackberry, At least I'm not ruining the planet and creating cancer custers that could eventually kill off entire cities and turn my species into mutants. The whole story would be on the NPR archive 12/22.
Merry Cristmas/Kwanzaa/etc. everybody. You don't need to call or text or buy me an e-pad.
Lama-G wishes you a great holiday!
E-waste....
It is the grim truth brother....The good news is that there is a growing network of conscientious recyclers that refuse send collected materials to processors that turn around and ship our problems to less fortunate places....
Ya know,
This bird and fish kil-off Arkansas and now Louisiana seems very frightening. I think the unknown is what is most terrorizing. Discarding fie crackers and hail, It seems clear that these starlings and blackkbirds and fish have been exposed to something that May Be extrtaterresteria l. I say "May Be: so people won't think I'm a nut.
What he hell is hapening an when miight it start hapening wih us? Is there a precedent for this. This is creepy.
Coincidence?
I have a buddy who works for the the University of Arkansas. He travelled this week to LA for the bowl game, and suddenly birds are falling out of the sky there too. Personally, I'm blaming him. The other alternatives seem to be equally wacky, so why not?
Frightening one way or the other...
End of the world
Did you catch the news that Rapture is going to occur on May 21, official end of the world for those of us who don't make the Rapture cut to be on Oct 21?
Most likely, birds falling from the sky and fish going belly-up are involved.
But whatever happened to 2012 being the end of the world? Were the Mayans...wrong?
And I feel fine...
Rapure cut
Dang Dean!
I've only got a little over three months to make the Rapture cut. I'm not gonna make it. I couldn't even make the cut for my litle league team when I was eight!
This is not good. Was your friend really outside of the Arknasas area or are you goofing,-- toying with my delicate balance. Don't freak me our out Mean Al Dean. There isalready enough bad shit going on. -- too much to keep up with.
I don't know, maybe it was the firecrackers, the crackersfrom their long, blond hair! The fish are another matter though, as well snow down to 200 feet in LA Basin.
My friend
Really was in Arkansas when the birds came down (having just recently moved there), really was in Louisiana when they started dropping out of the sky there. He disavows any connection or responsibility, but did admit that his co-workers were starting to avoid him.
As for End of Days...I was planning an End of the World Party for 2012. What to do, what to do about THAT?
I do wonder about the rapture and this exact date stuff. Does it happen simultaneously across the globe on May 21? If so, we do need to remember that it already tomorrow (or yesterday) somewhere else on the globe (you know, earth's rotation, local time, international date line, etc), so....ok now my head's going to explode.
But I would never, never try to mess with your delicate balance, Gonz. I'm not that mean.
Fish/Bird kills expands worldwide (no shit)
Greenland, Sweeden, other aeas of th US. Rapture --mI don't tend to believe in but something is going on. These newer animals being found are bleeding from the mouth. Off hand, I'd say this is not good sign..
Lets hope there is a rational, temporary explanation to this situation . More possible rather than the beginning of a nerve gas leak. in Siberia. It;s all so possible it almost makes you feel good raided your 401k.
