It's amazing to me that no one is up in arms protesting the choices of governments recently politicians are suposed to be civil servents, not CEOs, but today I see little difference. Both award themseleves bonuses and raises while the average citizen watches their standard of living go backwards. I know things are bad all over and much worse in the non developed world. I just hear so much frustration, I am so frustrated, yet not enough of us are willing to rise up and shout and hold our elected civil servents accountable. Okay enough of my ranting, there are those out there that can do it much better...and here I give you lyrics by Crass. Some of the references are dated, but the message still applies: (Note: I do not endorse all sentiments expressed in this song, but the overall message of personal responsibility always makes me think...and most often feel guilty I'm not doing more) Big A, little A, bouncing B The system might have got you but it won't get me 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 External control are you gonna let them get you? Do you wanna be a prisoner in the boundaries they set you? You say you want to be yourself, by christ do you think they'll let you? They're out to get you get you get you get you get you get you get you Hello, hello, hello, this is the Lord God, can you hear? Hellfire and damnation's what I've got for you down there On earth I have ambassadors, archbishop, vicar, pope We'll blind you with morality, you'd best abandon any hope, We're telling you you'd better pray cos you were born in sin Right from the start we'll build a cell and then we'll lock you in We sit in holy judgement condemning those that stray We offer our forgiveness, but first we'll make you pay External control are you gonna let them get you? Do you wanna be a prisoner in the boundaries they set you? You say you want to be yourself, by christ do you think they'll let you? They're out to get you get you get you get you get you get you get you Hello, hello, hello, now here's a massage from your queen As figurehead of the status quo I set the social scene I'm most concerned about my people, I want to give them peace So I'm making sure they stay in line with my army and police My prisons and my mental homes have ever open doors For those amongst my subjects who dare to ask for more Unruliness and disrespect are things I can't allow So I'll see the peasants grovel if they refuse to bow External control are you gonna let them get you? Do you wanna be a prisoner in the boundaries they set you? You say you want to be yourself, by christ do you think they'll let you? They're out to get you get you get you get you get you get you get you Introducing the Prime Sinister, she's a mother to us all Like the dutch boy's finger in the dyke her arse is in the wall Holding back the future waiting for the seas to part If Moses did it with is faith, she'll do it with an army Who at times of threatened crisis are certain to be there Guarding national heritage no matter what or where Palaces for kings and queens, mansions for the rich Protection for the wealthy, defence of privilege They've learnt the ropes In Ireland, engaged in civil war Fighting for the ruling classes in their battle against the poor So Ireland's just an island? It's an island of the mind Great Britain? Future? Bollocks, you'd better look behind Round every other corner stands P.C. 1984 Guardian of the future, he'll implement the law He's there as a grim reminder that no matter what you do Big brothers system's always there with his beady eyes on you From God to local bobby, in home and street and school They've got your name and number while you've just got their rule We've got to look for methods to undermine those powers It's time to change the tables. The future must be ours Big A, little A, bouncing B The system might have got you but it won't get me Be exactly who you want to be, do what you want to do I am he and she is she but you're the only you No one else has got your eyes, can see the things you see It's up to you to change your life and my life's up to me The problems that you suffer from are problems that you make The shit we have to climb through is the shit we choose to take If you don't like the life you live, change it now it's yours Nothing has effects if you don't recognise the cause If the programme's not the one you want, get up, turn off the set It's only you that can decide what life you're gonna get If you don't like religion you can be the antichrist If your tired of politics you can be an anarchist But no one ever changed the church by pulling down a steeple And you'll never change the system by bombing number ten Systems just aren't made of bricks they're mostly made of people You may send them into hiding, but they'll be back again If you don't like the rules they make, refuse to play their game If you don't want to be a number, don't give them your name If you don't want to be caught out, refuse to hear their question Silence is a virtue, use it for your own protection They'll try to make you play their game, refuse to show your face If you don't want to be beaten down, refuse to join their race Be exactly who you want to be, do what you want to do I am he and she is she but you're they only you

The Red River always gets my attention...
....every year Ted. I knew this was going to be a big year but are you sure that it's cresting 38-39 feet ABOVE flood stage above Fargo? (Checking) "FARGO – The Red River crested in Fargo-Moorhead at 38.75 feet at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Meanwhile, widespread breakout flooding Sunday was causing the highest flood levels ever seen in northeastern Cass County and northwestern Clay County, the Weather Service said. Saturday’s crest in the metro area ranks the 2011 flood as the fourth highest on record behind 1897 (39.10); 1997 (39.72) and 2009 (40.84). Since cresting Saturday, the river has been slowly falling in the Fargo area and Sunday’s rainfall, just under three-quarters of an inch by 10:30 p.m., was not expected to push the river back to crest level. However, the river will remain high for many days and it is not expected to fall below 36 feet before Sunday" It is great news that Fargo made it over the hump this year. The city had made a comeback and that ain't no small thing for a Dakota plains town. I really wish those people the very best as well as those downstream. It never ends in Fargo, just makes the biggest headlines there. It would seem that the figures sighted are official crest of the river, not the number of feet above flood stage. 38 feet above flood stage would be biblical. ~ Wake of the flood, laughing water, forty nine Get out the pans, don't just stand there dreaming, get out the way Get out the way ~

I sat thru the first 3 quarters of the CU game, on a beautiful day in Lawrence, then bailed with the Buffs up by 28. By the time I found an empty barstool at Fre State to order an IPA, some Jayhawk fan shouts that the game is tied.... KU did come back and win, for the biggest comeback in their history. I hope coach Dan and AD Mike are TOAST today in Boulder. In a tribute to Johnman, and an honor I'm sure, I poured myself a Copperhead Ale and served a gooey chocolate brownie before heading out to rake and bag leaves!! I'd prefer not to discuss the sad state of our political treachery, but the Republicans again have pulled the wool over many US citizens, with corporate funding and an endless media blitz.

35 yrs ago today, on Lake Superior. All 29 hands went down with the ship, their bodies never recovered. The Gordon Lightfoot song was a number 1 hit almost exactly a year later? Why have I thought for the past 34 yrs that he was singing about a ship that went down decades before he wrote the song? Guess I wasn't keeping up with the news as well as I thought in those days...

There was a thing on TV, 60 Minutes I think, about 10 years ago that went into the whole thing in detail. As I understand it, to this day no one knows why the ship sank; it was a good, newer ship with a good crew who knew what they were doing. What I didn't know until I saw this was that it was named after a guy who was still living, like the owner of the shipping company or something, who was so proud of the ship, and the whole thing broke his heart for the rest of his life.

I've canoed and camped along the Current River many times, both as a chapperone for youth groups and with my family. The Current River is a cool clean spring-fed stream known for it's clarity and trout-fishing. http://www.nps.gov/ozar/index.htm

I had the good fortune to see Jim Morrison with the Doors at Cleveland Public Hall: I still get a chuckle from the lyric he shouted out during 'Soul Kitchen" about wanting another cigarette. Several cigs, lighters, and packs of smokes came flying up on stage!! http://www.doorshistory.com/cleveland8-3-68.html He was certainly a wild performer. Too bad he was unable to control himself with his alcohol consumption. My sister, as a University of Michigan rep in 1967, said he downed a bottle of whiskey during a limo ride from Detroit airport to Ann Arbor: not sure if he ever made it onstage that night, for Michigan's Homecoming Dance!

My favorite thing about Furthur is that they are completely unpredictable. Plus with a bunch of new songs that are really good, reviving old songs we haven't heard in decades, bringing in Dylan, RatDog, Phil and Friends, Ryan Adams and some other covers, I mean heck, to me that is doing some very "interesting things with the music". Same could be said with Rythm Devils and 7 Walkers. It's all great stuff and I am grateful we get all this awesome music still. Let's hope it continues strong into 2011 and beyond! The whole interview, or just the excerpt on jambands.com? Sounded harsher to me in the out-of-context excerpt than it did in the full interview. But I'm with you, I don't agree with the Billy's assessment of Furthur (nor his apparently high opinion of Warren Haynes in the context of the Dead), but I think that he that should be well-pleased with 7 Walkers...one of my favorite studio albums of the year.

A link to Sen Tom Coburn's 2010 waste report, itself probably an example of wasteful spending. Interesting that the report cites the "net worth" of "two prominent band members" (Jerry and Phil) without noting that one of them has been dead for 15 yrs. Ahhhhh... http://coburn.senate.gov/public//index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&File_id=774a6c…

A story on NPR was quite shocking about the recycling of e-waste. Earlier this sumer I ws thinking bout buying a kindle and stp buying books to be more eco-friendly. Lilly reminded me about the waste created by these efforts. Well I just heard the story on NPR and I was truly shocked! Shocked! I don't know all the names and facts but got the gist. When you "recycle" (as a lot of us do) a full 80% is promptly shipped to China and Africa. In China there are whole mid-sized cities where they are cooking down the old components in big vats like soup and tobe in that atmosphere gives one immediate horrible headaches and the workers there are coming up with massive cancer clusters trying to leech out the valuable trace minerals from the circuit boards. I might have some of th tech stuff wrong, but the gist is horrifyingly correct.. In Ghana and other western african countries they are unvolvd in reproducing the old recycled product into a new product, advertising it as new! They get some of the motherboards with old information on them. Information thievery is pretty big over there and they used to get about $25 for an intact memory boards but now they have smartened up and are getting $300 for each one with the raw info intact. The good news? There s a caped crusader, whose name I forget, putting together a bunch of recyclers who won't just profit shipping this stuff offshore. They will have to meet rigorous and policed standards. The most crazy thing is that is it is highly toxic to make these things. It is not toxic during their useful lives (so far, that we know of) and it is is highly toxic at the recycling endpoint. And, yes, children are involved in the very end process, going through e-dumps and bashing old tubes for tiny bits of precious metals that remain. I know I didn't get this all right but it makes me think that I might not be so totally unhip without my kindle and I-pod and droid and blackberry, At least I'm not ruining the planet and creating cancer custers that could eventually kill off entire cities and turn my species into mutants. The whole story would be on the NPR archive 12/22. Merry Cristmas/Kwanzaa/etc. everybody. You don't need to call or text or buy me an e-pad. Lama-G wishes you a great holiday!

It is the grim truth brother....The good news is that there is a growing network of conscientious recyclers that refuse send collected materials to processors that turn around and ship our problems to less fortunate places....

Really was in Arkansas when the birds came down (having just recently moved there), really was in Louisiana when they started dropping out of the sky there. He disavows any connection or responsibility, but did admit that his co-workers were starting to avoid him. As for End of Days...I was planning an End of the World Party for 2012. What to do, what to do about THAT? I do wonder about the rapture and this exact date stuff. Does it happen simultaneously across the globe on May 21? If so, we do need to remember that it already tomorrow (or yesterday) somewhere else on the globe (you know, earth's rotation, local time, international date line, etc), so....ok now my head's going to explode. But I would never, never try to mess with your delicate balance, Gonz. I'm not that mean.
