One week during my initial stint with the Dead, Dick was spending a lot of time listening to 9/8/73, and he could not stop raving about it. He was very intent on pointing out that despite the absence of the 'Big Two' from 1973, every song, every solo, every moment was out-of-this-world excellent. He played me the first set, giving a play-by-play of each song and what made it special. In those listening sessions, Dick taught me a lot about how to listen critically and objectively. Of course, the subjective self always creeps in, those moments when you whoop and holler at how good a performance is, but that objective listening is critical. After many days of listening, Dick moved to other eras, as was his wont, since he carried the responsibility of selecting the best Dead shows from all eras to represent the Dead’s recorded legacy. But he made it clear and inarguable that he felt 9/8/73 was one of the best-played shows from one of the Dead’s best years." - David Lemieux

Despite the gloriously blustering artwork above, the forecast for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 38: NASSAU VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM, UNIONDALE, NY, 9/8/73 is blazing hot! With a double endorsement from archivists Dick Latvala and David Lemieux, you know it's a MUST HAVE. This one's got inspired playing from start to finish, with soon-to-be-minted Wake Of The Flood classics, a first-ever "Weather Report Suite," Keith polishing his chops on "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away," Jerry tapping into era-defining sound with his Wolf guitar, and we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Bob's exquisite playing too.

Among our 2021 Dave's Picks subscribers? The subscribers-only bonus disc featuring nearly an hour and a half from 9/7/73 is coming your way too. (P.S. there's 35 minutes of 9/7/73 on Dave's Picks Vol. 38, to boot)

They would be wise to follow-up with a mini holiday box of all the Little Stars ever played. The Bob Star Christmas Box with a Bob Star holiday ornament for the top of the tree. A good follow-up to the garden gnome theme. The ornament would be a high quality painted porcelain miniature replica of the 80's bobby from the short shorts up. A must have for the holidays.

Proudfoot - I was only goofing on my last name. It’s actually only 5 letters, of Irish derivation, but amazing how often it gets misspelled or mispronounced, so I went with Dave Watson, because I knew he’d like the autograph, and it’s an easy name to spell.

Burnsy - Glad to hear you are getting pumped for the Kraken! I’m trying to get Proudfoot hooked on Kraken, too! You are very right about the Seattle Metropolitans winning the Stanley Cup, but I didn’t know about the Spanish Flu putting an end to them, that’s really interesting,. Also kind of weird how we are 100 years later, battling the Kung Flu, and here Seattle hockey rises from the ashes… (cue: music)

Mr Ones: You sold me on The Third Mind, too! I had purchased stuff from their company before - Yep Rock - so I’ll likely order from them, or Bezos if I have other stuff to get. Played them on YouTube (loved the Fred Neil tune), and you weren’t kidding - really spacey stuff, but great jams that go places, not just meander. Thanks for the recommend!

Mike, that's actually not me on Amazon recommending The Third Mind. I got my copy from the local record emporium. And for the record, I am a Capitals fan, so I have 47 years of sucking/choking/repeated disappointments Etc.(plus one Cup!!)
I was in the music selling business for 22 years, mostly retail, but also mail order and wholesale. I got to meet dozens of musicians, most of whom were truly nice and down to earth. The absolute most humble and easiest to talk to were Steve Miller, Al Green, Alice Cooper and Peter Gabriel.
The biggest dick(and if you read his book, you'll understand) was John Fogerty. I truly love his music, but he was the whole ass.

Mr Ones - That’s cool you got to meet all those musicians, and even better that they were good dudes. I’m not surprised about what you say about John Fogerty - I read his book, and thought this guy has a major ego issue, then I saw him on a solo tour, and he is laying into Jerry and the Dead like they were a bunch of out of it weirdos, which I thought at the time really blew. Who gets on stage and does that!? A-hole.

As for the Caps, I went to see them the play their first season, 1975(?) when they won like 12 games or something, so bad they made the Leafs look like giants. The upside? They are way better now, and always in the mix. Just a bit of a choke come playoffs, but a hard team to take down.

At The R'nR HOF Dinner for CCR's induction, Fogerty told the Foudation he wouldn't accept the award or perform if other band members were involved, which of course included HIS OWN BROTHER!!! They had to sit like idiots in the crowd as he went and accepted and then did a medley of CCR with other musicians, Springsteen included...Screw him, Screw the Foundation for caving in...and screw Springsteen and all the othe musicians who helped this slimeball behavior...And so Stu Cook and Doug Clifford had to sit there and eat it in front of the industry...

Oops ...edit job...Stu & Doug did go onstage for the award but were not allowed onstage for the Musical performance...Tom had passed away a couple of years earlier and the Brothers were on bad terms when he passed...

Grateful Dead chatter! (instead of hockey talk) :)

The past four months I made my first "serious" foray through the two Spring '90 boxes. I had dabbled before, but had never done the complete shows in order. I gave myself tons of time, knowing that there was no way I could do the tour on its anniversary dates. I heard some playing that really excited me, but was surprised at how much of the best material had been released before the boxes came out. March 15th and 24th were already out there, as was the Scarlet-->Fire from 3/22, as well as the most interesting songs from the 25th and 26th. And the Branford material had been available in high-quality bootleg formats forever.

What I'll likely do is make some compilations (gasp!) of the best of the rest, as I cannot imagine that I'll listen to every moment of that tour again. The first show (3/14) is a burner, and will be cranked in totality again, but I'll probably make some "shows" culled from many shows' highlights.

And I'm officially done with "Victim". I'm hitting 'Skip' on that one for the rest of my listening years . . . :-O

Listening to this one today for the anniversary. Pretty good soundboard. I've never listened to the whole thing, only the Dark Star and Bird Song. I've decided I can't wait any longer for them to release this. I usually try to wait for the big shows to be officially released so that I can hear them for the first time with the "Full Norman" treatment.

I'm officially (finally) annoyed with the website. I decided what the heck, I'll submit my story of when I got on the bus for that Deadcast promotion they have going. It says you can write up to 250 words, but it stops letting you type in the box after 250 letters. The irony is that I considered submitting my story a couple of times and said nah, don't feel like it. So I finally gave it the thumbs up and typed 250 of the most interesting letters I could think of, and then kablam - no more typing allowed in the box.

Vguy good export / import joke - almost as good as the ahem...two religious leaders who get pulled over by the police.

Jimbo - you're 6'4"? That's some height I wish I had. I just figured everyone here was 5'9" like me.

Sixtus - happy birthday dude. You love June '76! Just wait until tomorrow's 6/11 show, which I assume is your favorite in the box.

Happy, happy, joy, joy to Sixtus, a Bday and 45 year favs anniversaries to boot!

6’4”, that’s pretty tall! I used to be 6’2” but now I’m closer to 6’....only good thing about being tall was on the floor at GA Dead shows etc!

FAMOUS FOLKS: have met several, have worked in several of their houses (never meet them only their peeps), off the top of what’s left of my head, I’d have to say Rick Danko was always a ridiculously nice guy! Had the pleasure to work with them in the mid nineties and he was always super nice and friendly!
Generally, I’ve found that celebs just like being treated like regular folk, their just people like the rest of you, of course I’m a dog, WOOF!

Go Isles! Sorry to our Mass brethren, just goofing round trying to have fun, no offense meant, though I still hate the Pats and Bs, always dug the Celts and Red Sox though... ; )

I can’t believe the AVS blew that game Tuesday. Now the Knights certainly played hard, and capitalized on opportunities, and they deserved to win, but the AVS coulda, shoulda won that game. Oh well, as Chris Bermen used to say “that’s why they play the game”...think it’s over now...don’t see the AVs going into the fortress and winning, the knights seem more juiced and the force there is just too strong! They needed to take care of business at home...at least it’s been an awesome series so far and the refs haven’t muffed it too much. Well good luck Vguy, it should be another beauty eh!

Sorry to the non-hockey folks, it’ll be over fairly soon and it’s been a tradition here for years.

What exactly does a triple deflection exactly mean. Do we have three more spies (web builders) then we did yesterday? Is Hockey code for deflections from Russia, through Canada to eventually write shitty code and muck up our website? (edit: Oh, not a triple defection, triple deflection.. nevermind)

Actually I saw that play. It was exactly then that I realized I am doing the wrong drugs to even watch this sport. It's better suited for younger, coke or meth addicted fans. I was watching that play, by god.. and I completely missed the goal. It was only when they slowed down the replay that I was able to see what happened. And in all honesty.. It wasn't until the third replay, played.. eeexxxtrrraaaa sslllss.lllow that I saw what actually happened. Where I come from we call that blind luck aka dumb luck. I guess that's part of the sport. But hey, I hear they plan a lot of GD during games during intermissions. That's good enough for me.

Seriously.. great game, great triple deflection. Congrats VGuy.

I'm with you jim,,,, I could care a rat's ass about any sport, but hockey WAY to fast. I just watched that play and yeah at normal speed looked like blind luck to me. Slowmo,,,,, still blind luck :-)

FYI - I don't care if people banter about the hockey games (to a point :-) ), nothing wrong with a flowing conversation among friends about common interest. Yeah Habs???

Well done and congratulations. Down 0-2 in games and down in the third period of game three against the mighty Avs. Very impressive.

Before the playoffs started, I pledged my allegiance to Canadaland. However, as these events have unfolded, I cannot in good conscience go against your GKs.

As promised, attached is a picture of mom with Alex Tuch. She is (or was) roughly 5'6". He's a big dude.

Sir James. Hockey is a fast sport. Very fast. And the goalies are better than you think. It's not like soccer where the goals are 50 feet wide. It's tough to get the puck past them. That's why you are taught at a very early age to deflect the puck. Your chances of scoring are much better when the shot changes direction. Even more so when it changes three times.

I wonder what the 3 releases will be that Dave talked about? Obviously, one will be the box set, if the box set is tied to MUATM, it will probably be an 89, 90, or 91 box with a dvd, or hopefully an Oct 74 box with videos. The other two released, will probably be Bears Choice 50th and Wake of the Flood 50th. I just hope they release full shows for both these releases, a full 1970 & a full 1973 show for both releases.

I agree that Skullfuck 50th is one of the three releases and the box that we all assume is coming is another of the three. I doubt that Dave's Picks counts so the third could well be a stand alone single show release. That could be 3 CDs and a DVD/BR video. Whatever, bring 'em on! Ark ark.

I agree, most vendors have cut back on the quality of the shirt...if someone advertises their probuct as "soft" you can bet it's a paper thin product...here's a vendor I've gotten a few shirts from over the past couple of years and they are all excellent heavy duty cotton...they have a rotating weekly offer page as well as a regular stock selection...I've gotten an Atco 45 label of "Crossroads" by Cream tee, an "East West" LP cover by Butterfield tee and a couple of Zappa and Jimi tees as well...good stuff from the UK

Yeah at Buckeye Lake I do actually think I remember you. I only remember a few tapers in front or on side in front of board, but 2 of them being me and then another friend several feet to the left.

Question: I few years ago I posted about to the name, and the person said there are 2 Oro's. Was that true at all or just one. It would be two if, you didnt post about making a ceramic oroborous and then giving that to Jerry when you met him at a restaurant near a show somewhere?

Was that you?
A psychedelic dream?
Speaking of which I recently dreamed I was sitting around talking to Gene Simmons about health insurance. It was a blurred but fiesty debate...

A week or two back someone posted about your dog eating its tail...obviously the name. Have not gone back to see actual post today. To me, it looks like the dog from "A Dog's Purpose." Cant remember the name though.

Uncle John's Band sandwich that goes for 20 minutes...tasty start...And sometimes I just enjoy hearing a great AUD on my headphones, especially Ventura shows where I can hear the breeze and smell the ocean...
