30 Days of Dead

Who needs a miracle everyday? We sure do and we bet you could use one too!

Consider this our gift to you for being so darn loyal... Each day in November we will be giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win a 2015 Grateful Dead calendar.

Most of you know the drill by now, but for those, that don't, here's the deal:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long and win a prize while you're at it.

Today's Song

Mississippi Half Step
Hint: A Wake Of The Flood song, which debuted more than a year before Wake was released…

Although the music was written by Phil Lesh, it was written at a time when Phil was not singing with the Grateful Dead, in 1977. It was sung by Bob Weir.

There it is

Took me awhile. The family was all like "visit with us, blah blah blah" But I told em about the priorities. Looks like the archive family has been waiting for this release for awhile

Thankee very mucho for this abundance of free Dead! November is quickly becoming one of my favorite months because of 30 Days of Dead. Every day is a new surprise. Yes, some days I say to myself, "Really? Another (enter repeat song)?". But undoubtedly it's a unique version and enjoyable music to my ears. Today's version of MHS is no exception. Just fantastic! So thanked again, ye good folks at Dead.net. Love to all and Happy Thanksgiving.

This is a great Half Step, but when you find the show look at the next four songs! That may be worth missing Thanksgiving dinner over :)

"Hey, Donna!"

I have this show sitting on my iPod....along with every other show from this year. What follows MHS is unique and pretty special. This made me consider what a good month this was across the years for the Dead. Hadn't thought about that before.

On the day that I was born, Papa sat down and died.

Wow, never heard that lyrical interpretation before!

My Thanksgiving Hint:
you can eliminate 7-18-72 from your search.

You're welcome :)

On with the hunt...

Which Year?

Was this show in '77 or '79?

was written by Phil in 1977, but Phil was sparing us his vocal gymnastics at that time - so Bobby took the lead vocals on it, ably assisted by Donna and Jerry at first, and Brent and Jerry after that.

the clues do abound

but went right past this one at first since alot of the soundboard versions of this tune jump right into the song without that forward clue, so once again found all kinds of tasty nuggets getting sidetracked looking for that one intro, only to stumble across it again buried in a not so great recording. synced it with a better recording and love the harmonizing with two tracks playing at once. wish i could play three at once, think i'll try that tomorrow, but for now i'm fried. not quite like a turkey, but stick a fork in me i'm done. have a peaceful thanksgiving one and all.

Happy holidays

Do I get the early bird reward? First song played at my first show from my favorite year. And the clues abound. Woke up in middle of night thinking the clue was gonna be "this one's for Adam."

Good Work Early Bird!

I lived in the region during these years, and caught shows West of here and earlier on this run. Found it early on.... so to celebrate my luck I think I will go outside, shoot some baskets during a friendly game, then maybe have 2 scoops with my pumpkin pie for dessert. :)
