Couldn't get to the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, but came close. Glad my second-hand recollections of the event aren't quite so narrow and cynical. Guess Woodstock will always be kinda like the elephant the blind men were trying to describe.

Those were very different times. Despite daily Vietnam body counts and political assassinations and riots, and. . ., there was still a surprising lot of hope in the air. Lots of us were protesting the war. We'd just landed on the moon. Peace Corps was a thing. Tricky Dick even authorized the EPA. . . Lots of the music, at and beyond WS, embodied that hopefulness (like the Grateful Dead in the rain 🤪). Naive? Certainly. Especially when viewed from the start of the 2nd quarter of the 21st century. I miss that "hippie hopefulness".

(Jerry's and other trashings notwithstanding, the GD's Woodstock set is always worth a relisten, and I'd have stayed for all of Jimi.)

My take.
Woodstock wasn't really about music. It was about thousands of young white people getting together for a weekend of sex and drugs. With a crowd that size - especially as far back as 1969 - most of them would only have been dimly aware of what was going on onstage anyway. It didn't really matter who was up there, or what they did if they were. All the musicians were doing was supplying background music.

By the time Hendrix appeared, the party was over, the acid had worn off, and those that were left just gazed in bemusement as he played the best music of the weekend. Others wandered off, completely oblivious as to what was happening. Jimi transcended the event like Jesus transcended Jewish society. You can see all this in the film.

Watched it last night and yes, when he starts the crowd is still up to the top of the hill although thinned out.
By Star Spangled Banner the crowd is only about to the towers, and by the time he is done playing there are not a lot of people remaining.
Maybe after 3 days a lot of people could not take the master guitar work of Jimi. Those people may have come for Joan Baez and Sha Na Na.

And the Kidd -- as an inveterate hitchhiker in my day -- leaving Eugene at night for the Bay Area via The Thumb, that's gutsy. Gutsy, not stupid, like when I hitchhiked home from 6-9-73 on 6-10-73 because my godfather was in town and I had school the next day. OMG!
