Grateful Dead

A 20 CD box set has just been delivered. No, not that one! This is ‘Along The Road Forever - Live at the BBC 1965 - 2022’ by Martin Carthy. This is limited to 2000 copies. I look forward to listening to it. It includes a signed photo, this seems a lot to ask of a 85 year old getting them to sign 2000 times.

In some ways, Jims post hits the nail on the head in terms of reactions to this box. Primarily because it is based on memories of having been there at the time - which must have been amazing. For me, though, my reactions are completely devoid of memories. I actually thought they had split up in 1985, so low was their profile and availability of new Dead music in Britain at that time.
I listened to 6/24/85 from 30 Trips yesterday, which I haven't done for many years, and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The best things for me, far and away, were Jerry' guitar playing and drums/space.
I am not so sure I want the box though. Bearing in mind that with postage, tax etc it is many times more expensive to buy if you don't live in The States. I might change my mind, and might miss out if I do and it's sold out. That's okay though. As it stands, the single show looks to be the way I will go - and hopefully it will be released in this country so I won't have to get one from The States.

I love Garcia's vocal work in Summer '85. Sure, it's probably an acquired taste. I attribute it to listening to (in particular) Hershey over and over again bitd when tapes were a lot harder to come by, and we took what we could get. This is not to discount Garcia's guitar as his playing is outstanding - in fact, that goes for each and every band member's performance on this tour. I've had most of June '85 in my collection for decades now, but with the exception of 6/25 this box set will include the shows that I've come back to more than almost any other in all of the 1980s. I'm profoundly grateful that we're getting this box!

44 years ago I was down at the Ventura County Fairgrounds for a wild weekend with the Good old Grateful Dead. The first year down in Ventura for the Dead, what a party! Crazy fun times!

A summer 91 deep dive. Love it! One of those tours where the band experimented with song placement and new additions. The Vegas Birdsong with Carlos Santana as a guest is one of many great moments.

Jimmie! Sounds like you in the right place right time for shows. Can only imagine.

I did bite on the 85 box, I was at three of the shows and am one of the lucky few that has an uncanny ability to overlook Garcia's froggy vocals and see the brilliance of his guitar work during this summer tour. I walked to the two Merriweather shows from my parents house and we had big parties after the show. In hindsight, my parents just let us have at it because they knew if they stood in the way it would have damaged our relationship perhaps irreparably. These were magic times in my youth. I had already moved out and was in college so people were travelling in from all over. And we walked to the shows. No risk of being pulled over or frisked. Anyway..

What am I listened to now? Lots of GD. I have been revisiting the 81 Rainbow Theatre release pretty heavy this week. I also got nudged into 2/14/68. One of the best Grateful Dead Shows ever performed.

I got sidetracked into a total refurb of a house built in 1900 that has been a little intense and at times overwhelming. I am doing it to help pay for my son's college, he starts in (think scary music as I say this) five weeks.

Reality hits and it's scary, when you get confused just listen to the music play.

Edit: My older brother is a bit of a head too. A scary smart, retired rocket scientist.. got stoned and tripped for the first time with him, but I saw the dead before he did (barely). We saw a lot of shows together and he has always been a guiding light. He shared the 'burden' of having crazy after parties at my parents house when the dead played Merriweather. Great times, shit you cannot make up, it just happened and then it was unfortunately over. All we have left now are the memories, the tapes and what will be I hope a great box set.
